Help with my Rubber Plant

Calling all the gardening pros to advise me on my rubber plant.
I’ve always loved and admired plants and flowers. But Sadly was never able to grow any and always ended up with artificial flowers in my home. However recently I completely fell in love with rubber plants and bought couple for my home. They’ve transferred the whole room and I couldn’t be happier. I almost cried when they’ve started growing new leaves and it was so rewarding! But recently I’ve noticed that the bottom leaves have started getting yellow one after another and slowly falling off.
Any advise as to why it’s happening and why now (I’ve had them since October) what should I do to encourage new leaf growth or perhaps get the plant to branch out?

This is where we need to know more about your hedge which I can't tell from the photo. If it's Leylandii you cannot cut it behind the last green shoot because it will not re-shoot and you'll be looking at a brown curtain forever. If it's brown because it's diseased then that is another problem altogether! My suggestion is you join the Royal Horticultural Society and then send them a sample of the dead clipping for them to pronounce upon! I can't tell you about diseases for sure and not at a distance. You'll also get plenty of plant advice from them generally. www.rhs.org.ik you'll be in safe hands there (it's only about £40 per year and has other benefits too. Good luck.

Hi again, A few ideas to cover the brick wall between patio doors: The English Ivy I mentioned in a previous post is species of ivy that is green during winter. Ivy in general is fast-growing and requires minimal care, once you plant it and ensure it has gripped to a wall the weather will take care of the rest for you. English Ivy is very fast-growing so needs to be cut back fairly regularly. Boston Ivy is less invasive than English Ivy, though unlike English Ivy it is not evergreen. If you have pets, be careful with ivy - some species are toxic to cats, dogs and other household animals. The Virginia Creeper is climbing plant that is similar in appearance to many ivies, but its leaves redden in autumn (a look I quite like but is not to everyone's taste) and fall altogether winter months, which would leave the wall looking a bit bare again during winter. I love Passiflora, it's an evergreen, climbing plant that produces fruit and beautiful flowers in Spring-Summer. It is also really hardy and low maintenance - once I was able to revitalise a Passiflora plant that appeared to be dead. Wisteria takes slightly longer to grow and therefore to see the results of, but in my opinion is well worth the wait - its blossom is absolutely beautiful. However, it does lose its leaves completely in winter. Additionally, it would be a shame to keep Wisteria confined to the back garden - I think it is at its best on the front/road-facing exterior of a house, so that everyone can enjoy it. Any of these climbers (Wisteria, any subspecies of ivy, Virginia Creeper and Passiflora) would look great. All you need is to fix a trellis to the wall and you're ready to go!

Hi I love my indoor plants too and understand your frustration in finding you have a poorly plant. My first thought might be over watering but I had a quick look up and it appears there could be two options; Needy Roots Bottom leaves that turn yellow and fall off may be a sign of cramped roots or shortage of nutrients. Rubber trees must be repotted periodically into the next size pot or their roots will begin to grow around and around the root ball and out the drainage holes, eventually strangling the plant’s roots, blocking its ability to absorb nutrients. Plants need slow-release or half-strength liquid houseplant fertilizer monthly while they are actively growing. Rubber plants seldom bloom indoors, so nitrogen, which provides food for foliage growth, is the probable need; shortages of potash lead to necrotic leaf edges and leaf drop at the bottom of the plant. Operator Error Both overwatering and underwatering might cause lower leaves to drop. Rubber tree fleshy leaves are akin to succulents that store water in their leaves, so too much water will cause leaves to become spongy and fall off. Continual overwatering can lead to edema and death; underwatering dehydrates the tropical plant. Rubber plants can be allowed to dry a bit before water is added to encourage use of reserves. Another common mistake involves placement of plants near floor vents that create a draft of hot air in winter or cold air in summer. Rubber plants do best in warm temperatures -- 75 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and 60 to 65 degrees at night -- without drafts.

As the pots look pretty small and will dry out quickly I would suggest Pelargoniums (sometimes called geraniums) which thrive in dry conditions. My cousin in Italy has several on her balcony in bone dry soil and they are thriving. They are a tender perennial which will not survive our winters unless you can over winter them in a greenhouse. Most people treat them as summer bedding and discard them after the summer.
