Depends on the room, some designs really suits towel bar, especially when the accessories are intrinsic to the design. Other times you just want to hide things on the back of a door, so both have their place.

I agree. The painted ceiling is making the room feel smaller. It seems like they are 2 separate rooms. Emphasised by the different rugs and slightly different colours. Bring in some cushions that tie in with the curtains. Remove the rugs, repaint the ceiling same as the coving. I would be tempted to paint the doors. Reorientate the bar furniture so it’s facing the bar and put in a larger coffee table with some side tables and lamps.
