Sealing exposed stonework from dust

I am keeping my stones /bricks exposed in my living room and stairs coming down from loft and in my bedoom. I didnt want to pay builder any more to re-point as its costly /time consuming,besides i like the natural look.
But the dust is constant. Is there any special coating I can put on stones/bricks to seal in the remaining dust?

Hi,

that could be a lovely feature wall. I googled for you and this article came up (and lots of others) http://www.neverpaintagain.co.uk/blog/diy-advice-on-sealing-internal-brick-walls/

They suggest using PVA. And they name a couple of other brick sealing products too. Good luck.

Thanks thats really helpful.
I no my plasterers were using pva glue before plastering (but didnt realise I could also use for this reason) they've gone now hence its the tidy up jobs mainly now.
I have pondered long hard with keeping brickwork exposed I love the feature however my daughters 22 & 18 & Mum think I should have it plastered so its nice clean.
If I can try seal it maybe can convince them.Its a tough one as I di understand in winter it is cold looking.I just dont really want more plastering done as thats so messy. It will be nice to finally have builders gone and get my house back so I can begin the long process of tidying up all the dust dirt etc.And finally have clean floors.

Hi Saz I attacked my brick work with a wire brush, scrubbed with water then used brick and mortar cleaner (a hydrochloric acid solution) to get the last of the plaster off. It's quite a lot of work but it doesn't cost much if you want to have a try before considering other options. I have read you are then supposed to seal it with a watered down PVC solution but I haven't gotten that far yet.

Well as you can imagine, work stopped a few weeks ago. I've managed to get some supplies delivered so I'm doing the DIY bits. I'm currently boarding out the dining room ceiling to slightly lower it and to install downlights. The wiring and boarding should be done well before my builder us allowed back. Then I have to source the kitchen all over again!

Clearly you are extremely worried about your predicament and this will be causing you a great deal of stress and worry. You must remember that asbestos is everywhere and we are all exposed to it when out and about in built up areas - car brake pads are the cause of high asbestos levels at road junctions. Exposure at home has, for us all, not been caused by us deliberately ignoring health and safety advice, simply we have all worked with materials during DIY activities that we did not know contained asbestos and now that these building materials and their associated risks are being communicated more to us doing DIY, we now have our own decisions to make about how much we are prepared to follow the precautions. I am unsure if you can get true piece of mind from us on houzz as individuals attitudes to asbestos health and safety are very subjective. The British Lung Foundation Helpline (03000 030 555) is one organisation that can offer advice and I hope you can find help and support to move forwards. Your predicament will have many of us thinking back to previous jobs and wondering about the exposure we have had. We all need to consider asbestos exposure with our future DIY jobs.
