What Sealant coat to stop dust?

Can anyone recomend whats the best clear sealant coating to paint over my exposed stonework in my cottage.
The dust has been hell to get to this stage now all I need to do is find a coating to stop any further dust around the house.
All advice welcome as love to get it done this weekend.
Ideally want it clear so as colour doesnt go any darker.
Any extra advice on cheap way to tidy around my window/window seat (till I've monry to get new window)most welcome.

5 years agoNot an expert on this but I’m pretty sure you shouldn’t use PVA to seal exposed stone, especially if you have used lime mortar/plaster or if the building is rendered on the outside. Have you tried just washing the walls with water, this should eliminate the remaining dust and not effect the walls ability to breathe. Or you could add a bit of lime putty mixed with the water and give it a lime wash. Not sure about the window sill but I think some traditional painted joinery would look nice, perhaps with a tongue and groove panel on the uppy bit (technical term;)) or even some traditional solid wood shutters.

Comments (78)TRADESMEN. It's a miracle when one bothers to quote at all ... as such, I now build walls, can plaster, and drive a digger lol... I tile, fit carpets, fitted the kitchen, all with only half of one of my lower spinal discs left. By the time you get a quote back, its more often a month or more down the line and have already hired a couple of lads on a daily rate doing things how you dictate after weeks of research. I hired a roofer to replace my cast iron guttering with aluminium ones, he put up new soffits and fascias BADLY, ran off to assume weigh in my old gutters and ran off with the money for my new ones - steep learning curve there, and a CCJ is no use getting my money back. I purchased a kitchen, it turned up in bad shape, then commenced over 8 months to get to court for my money back... Hired a tree co to remove a load of trees overhanging the house and clear the boundary... an old man cried about a tree that wasnt his anyway so the tree folk abandoned the job. Thankfully I have a great electrician and a reliable plumbing company, but only call them for either gas or. heavier electrical work.... the husband does to electrics and plumbing but he hates it and we do get it checked. I keep trying to find a good builder though. Everything takes so long and its physically and mentally draining on me.... Comments (54)Yes, the brush marks don't appear visible and the finish of the plaster itself (including directional marks etc) remain visible. A word of caution though I have also used Polyvine over painted walls (flat matt paint and flat matt polyvine) and on the painted surface I do see more brush marks. It's not terrible but (to my eye at least) you can see the application marks. I used the polyvine to add extra protection on the wall going up the stairs which is always subject to scuffs and knocks. At first I just took the Polyvine half way up the wall but it was very obvious where it stopped. 5 years agoMistake I meant "Bond It Builders Complete Stabilizing Solution" This is what someone else suggested.
Kingfisher Interior Brick and Dust Sealer is another I found think I will have to order though which is but pain else try Builders merchants none open over weekend.

3 years agoHi Melanie, apologies for unearthing an old thread but can you tell me what you used in the end and if you were happy with the results? I've just finished pointing our own wall and wondering what to do with it now. I need to clean it down too. Did you use a cleaner of some sort or just water?
