Black or Grey windows & bi-fold doors?

So for our rear extension (8m in total) we will have some bi-folds and a side window and a dormer dolls house added at the back of the house.

I wanted black colour originally for the inside but I'm thinking that the anthracite grey might look softer externally? ie have them two tone.

Black inside because I want to try and go for a more industrial look and grey outside as the paintwork on the walls will be a white and the flat roof grey with grey roof tiles on the rest of the house.

Any thoughts??

Was thinking grey externally is easier to keep looking clean, less harsh against the white as no exposed brickwork as such....

Also if I did go for a white window in the single top dormer, would this look odd? White is just cheaper ;)

Tani I haven’t been on Houzz as much so not sure where you are on renovation but seen you’re looking at cost effective options. I just wondered if it would be nice as well as cheaper if instead of bifolds you had multiple glazed single doors with brick pillars in between? I can’t find a pic but I’ve seen pics of this on a high end commercial to residential period conversion where I presume they wanted to retain the original openings which were probably windows before but they’d taken the lower bricks out so the windows could be doors. It was a great industrial kitchen living space with lots of exposed brick but lots of light from the glazing.

Hi Tani I really enjoy your updates! You're project seems so far ahead of mine :)

i have a red brick house, with white windows, and am planning black (sliding?) doors. Similar to these images.

I do think black can work with white render too, obviously depending on the exact house/look. Are you having any brick?

Hi Jen! oo well we are just at pricing stage and finalising everything now with the potential builders so they always priced for white (didn't realise) and coloured always cost more, haha.

I think we have some brick at the back up to 2.5/3ft from the ground and then it's painted pebble dash across the back - but the extension will go straight across so you won't see any brickwork at all then. He hasn't mentioned about brickwork at the bottom so i will have to see.

Ultimately it will be a white finish render (or soft white?!?!) at the back with the bi-folds and then you will just see the roof tiles (grey) and a dormer window. I think white up top would look fine with a different coloured door below. Break up all the grey! haha

Hi We did a project very similar in November if you are still looking for someone to do the work. This project also had a balcony added to the upper floor french doors when the clients had finished and the bifold doors opened up to allow full access to the garden. We made the framework from Accoya timber which is highly resilient to moisture.

We stayed in an apartment last year and the bifold doors had insert blinds on the doors, like the first picture above (turquoise ones) from Hillary’s. They were white and to be honest you hardly noticed them at all when they were up, so maybe a soft grey or off white might look nice? As far as greige paint colours go, the world is your oyster! I’ve used Dulux Egyptian Cotton and love it. Also Farrow & Ball do many shades of greige such as Skimming Stone and Elephants Breath, but there are so many! I would grab as many colour charts as you can and then get some match pots and paint them on sheets of paper and blue tack to your walls and see what catches your eye.

Hi Tani, Antracite grey RAL7016 frames externally is a very popular choice with our clients, but we do get some that like going for black with white walls. Have look at our projects on our Houzz profile for examples or our website: www.croydonwindows.com

Hi Emily, sounds amazing. I'm not sure my house could carry it off, haha. I imagine you need quite a wide area of glazing to work with or maybe just fixed panels and one set of doors.

My husband loved the bi-folds as he wants to be able to open the house up to the garden but I would consider larger sliding doors because there is more glass. Hard to decide. Not sure which is cheaper either for aluminium...
