wood balusters on knee eall without shoe rail

We are replacing the wood balusters on our stairs that has a knee wall and a shoe rail/fillet installation. We are replacing with square wood balusters on the knee wall but don't want to use a shoe rail. Instead, we want to just mount the balusters into the knee wall cap. What is the best technique to make this secure?

    The reason a shoerail is used is because it secures the balusters with a strong joint between the balusters and the wall. If you're looking for a cleaner look, you could do a shoerail shown in this video https://youtu.be/n1XkA1I5jaE

    You could cut angled tenons on the bottoms of each balluster.
