looking for information on bamboo flooring before I buy

Went to lumber liquidators and they showed me amber city engineered bamboo flooring by eco world flooring which I understand is lumber liquidators own company brand. I went in looking for Bellawood which they had, but she felt that for a bedroom, this would be sufficient. I don't want it to warp and I read that some bamboo warps. Does anyone have any experience with this company or can they recommend a better bamboo flooring.

Three things definitely to stay away from in the flooring world (there are others but..........). Lumber Liquidators, Cheap Bamboo and anything Bellawood...................

As millworkman states. I HATE engineered bamboo. I mean the stuff that sits on FIBRE BOARD that clicks together. There can be sooooo many issues with this type of product that I don't have time to tell you everything there is know about this.

Suffice it to say, bamboo NEEDS interior STABILITY. That means the HUMIDITY must be kept CONSTANT! I mean within a 10% range (40%-50% is a "10%" range). First things first: check your HVAC system. Do you ALREADY HAVE the humidity control? That means you touch a button and adjust the humidity up or down and then press "Set" on the touch-pad controller mounted on your wall.

If you DO NOT have this feature, you will need to do one of two things:

#1. Find something else (no bamboo, no hardwood, etc)

#2. Purchase and install the additional hardware needed to be able to control the internal environment ($6K should do it).

Your location and and local external environment (West Coast, East Coast, Deep South, High desert, etc) will determine the TYPE of extra hardware needed.

Once you decide to do all that is necessary to add bamboo, you will then look for SOMEWHERE ELSE to purchase your products. Lumber Liquidators is NOT the place to shop if you want quality - of any sort. It is where you go when WANT new flooring every 5-7 years ('cause it only lasts that long).

Bamboo *SHOULD cost $9/sf for "mid-grade" product. The "good stuff" starts at $12/sf. And you would purchase such products from places like Calibamboo or a high-end hardwood flooring shop run by a Ma&Pa operation that has been in business for at least 25 years. They will have seen the bamboo trend "come and go and then die". They would have seen many failures and many successes. They will ONLY carry the 'successes'.

That's how you find bamboo. But please check your HVAC system to find out what needs to be added for bamboo and hardwood.

Thank you everyone. I was sorry to hear about GGDrive's misfortune with the flood but really enjoy hearing all your opinions. I had granite in my previous house and it looked gorgeous but from a practice point of view, it cooled the food quickly if you didn’t remember to use a cork placemat and is very cold if you lean on it to chat over a cup of coffee. It was also tricky to keep shiny, despite the special granite polish. Quartz is pretty too but both options cost more than I paid for the base and wall units. I saw a very impressive and economical Formica with oak woodblock finish, but was hoping to have a KARNDEAN wooden style floor and having read the discussions on HOUZZ, think the two would fight each other. The kitchen is small by USA standards and in a U shape with satin white units. Shall I A)emphasise a Spring Oak Karndean floor and find plain Formica (slate pic) or B)have the oak effect Formica worktops (see oak pic) and chose a slate tile effect Karndean floor? Remember that Rome wasn't built in a day.. Neither the house you want to make a home... If the house feels right. With your Head and your heart, location. Then if it's the house for you it will work.. Move in and adjust each day... Yes you can put your Mark on the house, yes it will be your HOME... But live with it for at least a short while.. Don't be hasty to paint.. See where the sunshine..shines...See where it makes dull on a dark day...So you Can add a mirror maybe to reflect the daylight.. Don't make the pennies stretch any further than they are.. Remember that sadly the bills have to come first..!!!.... Improvise pieces to fit and...if you have to save for the right item....Then save..!!! it will be more practical in the end , rather than buying for the sake of it and having to buy another a few months down the line... Don't fill every room with furniture.... My biggest mistake... Use a piece like a sideboard and think practically the uses.... Is it big enough.. One more draw or cupboard would have better than two smaller ones...don't be afraid to add old stuff that we all now reuse..paint it ...add your own art work... It's a long journey.. To find the destination of all your dreams... And when you feel you have achieved what you have done...then sit back and enjoy all your hard work. And live in your HOME... Enjoy. Relax.. And above all have fun...

Hi Lola, I like the sketches "Man about the house" did, these show a simple corridor. The issue may be that the thickness of the wall takes off the room and it creates a very dark corridor. I had an almost identical problem on a recent project so I did a glass wall with sliding glass doors. This saved space and allowed loads of light into the hall area. I also added full length curtains behind the glass for privacy obviously. Here is a picture of the room when it was finished. Thank you for all the information. I live in Florida, so I am grateful for the information and especially about the humidity factor. Never thought about that, so I will check on that before I decide what to do. I did look for a reputable small company that did flooring, as I had a company that I used in New Jersey and they were fantastic. He was a real artist when it came to wood. However, I have not been able to find anyone like that here in Orlando. Just these big name companies. I may decide to go with ceramic tile that looks like wood, maybe that would be a better choice in the end. I do thank all of you for your help.

Hi Barbara, what did you end up going with? I'm also in Orlando and we're considering getting bamboo flooring as well, but not sure about the humidity problems that could arise.
