So I loved my wallpaper when we first put it up but since then we’ve acquired more bits and bobs and I’m in need of a change in our living/dining room. I want to keep the dining chairs but happy to change sofas and dining table. There’s only me and my hubby, no kids. I’d love a more traditional x contemporary look that’s tied together throughout the room. Any ideas please? Need to wow the OH to convince him to redecorate! Thank you!

I would not place the TV above the fireplace. It will be too high up for comfortable viewing.

So, here's what I would do: I would keep the 3-seater, replace the 2-seater with one comfy chair. I would move the TV to the other side of the fireplace and place it on a wider sideboard/media unit and wallpaper the niche in a blue/teal paper (to go with the curtains. A rug would tie the living area together, make it cosy.

Then I would turn the dining table around. Perhaps hang a wall lamp above it.

Hi,

This is just a few ideas to get the ball rolling.

The question is how much would you like to change? How in depth of a make over would you like?

For a more contemporary look. I would suggest taking the wall paper off. Painting the room in a light colour, white or light grey.

By changing the sofas, to something more modern, it will add to the tone of the room as it is a large item. You can see some of our sofa's on our website: www.strazzia.com

The floor could always be sanded and made into a lighter colour. Chairs and table look nice as is.

You could have shelving units on each side of the fireplace. Have a lighter colour curtain.

Although it's helpful you posted a plan, I think a couple more pics from different angles (one showing the french doors f.i.) would help people here to come up with ideas.

Hi. I must admit I don't mind your fireplace. The beading round the hearth looks as if it's too deep though? If so I would replace and paint black to tie in with the hearth. You could if wanted paint the surround a mid to dark grey. Perhaps try the mirror hung the other way. I like the plant adding height but it looks too big for the cabinet. I might replace the cabinet with an old slim tallboy and add a table lamp and have the plant on the floor. Perhaps an antique trunk to bring furniture into the room which can be accessorised. Personal preference would be a wood floor with rug as the wood adds warmth and I'd add pattern for the rug but a carpet would also look good. Do you want to add any colour at all? If not, add different textures with cushions, throw and accessories. Maybe think about slighter bolder patterns for the cushions. If possible I'd move the 3 seater up so you can pull the sofa out of the bay a little. Perhaps a small arc lamp over the sofa? Your window treatment looks nice but if you have the budget I might go for something richer in fabric

I think it's going to be a beautiful space. Greys and safe green is perfect. Being an artist I studied colour theory and would advise you having a look at a colour wheel and seeing that complimentary colours of green are red and so hints of a muted red would look beautiful and pull the room together nicely. Images on your walls with these colours would look good and a little tip that high end galleries use to sell their work is to have white frames for coloured artwork and and black frames for black and white work. The wallpaper is very interesting, but it’s too dictatorial. It might work as a dado below a chair rail. Th front feet of the seating pieces should be 6”-8” onto a rug to anchor the space and separate the two functions of the space. Sitters need places to set down a book/drink/snack. Lamps are needed in the sitting area for flattering light and reading light.

Personally, I love the wood floors and colors of your couch and pillows. The wallpaper just doesn't do it for me, it's a little too busy.

I like the wallpaper. If it were me I would keep it and paint the remaining walls a colour that is in the paper such as the grey. I would then add a rug near the sofas, a big floor standing mirror on the wall papered wall and some big art for the plain walls. Instead of replacing sofas I would get rid of the throws but buy some cushions in their place.
I like the table and chairs but if you are trying to update the look why not just replace half of the chairs with something similar but different.
Lastly I would buy an extra piece of furniture for storage to replace the drinks trolley

I agree with Jonathan. Try keep the wallpaper. It's interesting and gives your home your personal flavour.

The dining table appears a little squashed into its area. Maybe pulling the sofa a bit further towards the fireplace gives you the opportunity to pull the dining table away from the wall. Do you need the two chairs on the ends of the table?

You could consider a bench along one length of the table to replace three chairs.

A bit of a dark photo but this is from behind the dining table looking out towards the French windows. Thanks for all of your advice so far. I’ve been thinking about painting the LHS wall with paper on (behind the trolly) to match the others and putting a piece of furniture instead of the trolly. Tv is going above the fireplace and was debating on replacing the smaller sofa (in front of the table) with two armchairs which would sit either side of the fireplace. Thoughts?

Thank you, Carolina. I really like that as an idea! I love he blue but was trying to steer away from it as almost all of the rest of the house is decorated in tones of dark blue. Thank you for the floor plan though - it really helps :)

I love your floor, such a lovely rich colour. Your sofas are nice too. The throws look messy, but I spotted a putty cat, so the throws are for them maybe? The wallpaper is ghastly (sorry!), however there are some lovely gentle geometric wallpapers which won’t be so in your face, but I personally would stick to painting the wall then add a lovely piece of artwork or a mirror. You do need a rug in a nice neutral design, buy the biggest you can afford. I really like Carolina’s design. It just seems to make better use of the space. Blue is a fabulous colour!

Yes I’m afraid the throws are for 2 pussy cats and a dog! All tidied away when we have guests! The animals rule the house!

Glad you like it :-) So, if you’d rather stay away from blue, how about plum/purple and teal? I think that that would go lovely with your curtains. And it’s a bit different.
