How about keeping the gravel as it is - it keeps the weeds down after all and is low maintenance but planting something like lavender through it - nice smelling, will soften the edges and required very little looking after except for a cutdown once a year - can't tell exact scale but 7-10 3l lavender plants planted through could make a big difference pretty quickly and inexpensively

Dear Gail as far as I can tell from your photo the existing rosewood looks very attractive, indeed it is probably the most attractive rosewood house I have ever seen. In my opinion It is planting that will make the biggest difference, even, as people have already proposed, just adding some planters - however take your time in choosing the right planters/shrubs and plants. Lechuza (www.lechuza.co.uk/) do self watering/sub irrigation planters - nothing worse to bring down the even most attractive house than dried out uncared for planters/garden. Mona Pantsava (available amongst others at www.waterirrigation.co.uk - purchased my water timers here and received great customer care with one faulty timer after a year from purchase) do a range of sub irrigation tanks for standard planters and pots that are not so expensive as lechuza and open up wider choice but you will have to put extra effort in to make your own up (www.albopepper.com explains concept of sub irrigation very well) and give thought to weather resistance. Or look at sprinkler/drip feed watering system. I definitely think improving the planting will make the biggest difference. I hope it all comes together for you.

Hi, for us taking a step back and re thinking with a local builder who we really got on with was the game changer. He had people he worked with regularly who helped with amending the drawings etc. He also really wanted the job because he could see the potential, we are also fortunate to have a big green with easy access to the plot. He was one of many I contacted through Checkatrade after reading reviews. We really had got stuck trying to adapt the grand design to fit our budget and were intending to go ahead with that end result. Then one day I was in the garden and looked back at the house and realised we were going to end up with some pointless box on the back of the house so I posted on Houzz and now work has started and we are really excited. Covid has made a difference to cost and availability but our builder is as on top of that as he can be and we are taking his advice on e.g which bricks are readily available and reasonably priced. It is early days for our build (concrete poured on Friday) so we have our fingers crossed it will stay a positive experience throughout! So my advice would be don’t give up but be prepared to keep searching for the right person to help you achieve what you want, be open to the suggestions of others but don’t forget how you want to use the space when you have it. I tend to design based more on a price of £2.5k at early sketch design stage, and then get plans costed by an estimator to get a more accurate elemental budget cost. You also need to allow for VAT, contingency, and any approvals you might need to apply for, plus it's wise to get a full refurb/demolition asbestos survey to protect yours and the builders health.
