What would you do with this house?
We are considering buying this house, but trying to figure out how we could make it more attractive. We're thinking that we would replace the metal siding, the door and windows and add a big front porch. Originally my husband was thinking of cedar shingles, but that seems too expensive. Maybe white siding with black trim around the windows? Are we crazy? Is there a way to make this more appealing ?

Comments (152)Hi Nicky, my apologies I have only just seen your message. We went for cornforth white Farrow and Ball (which it definitely not white). The shutters are not back open yet but some of them will need to go back on because the large expanses of grey look very grey. The bits next to the white look less austere. The new white garage door with windows has made a big difference. I'd be careful with a very pale grey because if your windows are anything like mine you'll find that they are not actually that white after all.......See Morewhat would you do to the front of this house...
Comments (10)Attached houses that are substantially different from their neighbours are worth less and devalue the whole street so you shouldn’t change the window colour. As far as replacing windows I think the money could be better spent replacing the things that are not so good- in my opinion the wire fence, the gate path and side wall could all be improved. Personally I would rather see a wide path to the front door- assuming the side path is not going to another property I would rather see just one path and a wider one would be grander. I would add a low fence to the garden side wall and then replace the wire fence with the same wood. Personally I would put some trellis on the house wall to the left of the front door to decorate an otherwise plain wall. I like to see grass in a front garden but perhaps some boarders would be nice too....See More

5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoI agree with Denita...I would keep the contemporary feel of the house...A porch and shingles wouldn't work in that case.
I do kind of like the vertical look of the existing siding and if you don't have to replace it yet, then absolutely paint it and put the money toward central air...
ETA: for future ideas...
Keep the landscaping simple but dramatic...(expensive, but start with a plan and implement it in stages.)
Dont forget a wow front door color...like the citrus green above.

5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoLandscaping would be ahuge improvement, get proper air conditioning. I have no idea what the things are beside each side of the door. You need a wakway from the street to the door and a new door if what we see is your front door. I think if you go in a more contemporary direction the steel siding would work. I would do a balconey from yhe main living space something like this

if possible, enlarge the front door opening.
This one is a nice mix of the two. I'd do something along this line, using the natural wood siding. you could do vertical or horizontal on the top or the bottom.

5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoWell, have an inspection to get the lowdown, first. Then, if it's a go, make an offer if there's not any glaring problems (take into account how long it's been on the market...)
Then put the money into making it efficient and livable. In the mean time, collect pictures of houses that appeal to you and you'll start to see a pattern in what you love. You won't be able to duplicate most likely, but you can aim for a similar feel to what you like.
Landscaping is important, but in my opinion, that would be last. Don't forget exterior lighting.....it can make a contemporary/modern house.

5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoI don't think the problem is siding. I think it's edges & details. I wouldn't make the porch long in front of the house as that makes nice landscaping more difficult. Consider a squarish porch.

The house needs a 'face' maybe something like this.
It needs AC. If the house has radiant baseboard heat that makes things way more complicated because you need a SpacePak unit to provide AC $10 15k
