Off centre fireplace

Hi i have a lovely old fireplace with bread oven but it's not central to the wall it's on so I feel the sofa looks wrong as it has to go on opposite wall but can't go directly opposite cos that is where living room door is ??

Do you have photos? Rugs are good for zoning spaces if the rug is large enough to incorporate the fireplace as well as the sofa. Could you also add a chair next to the fire angled towards the sofa?

HI Sarah I love what you have achieved. Many congrats for embracing what you have and creating something that totally enhances the placement of the fireplace. The space looks like it was made for the placement of that perfect chair and you've done a gorgeous job with your selection and placement of art . I am moving with considerable grief from my gorgeous arts and crafts bungalow to an early1970s small house. I have to say this style of architecture in NZ wasnt exactly a highlight. But I set myself a challange to embrace the architecture and look to enhance rather than fight it . That challenge shifted me off my despair track and now I am excited and hopeful and thinking about space and colour and the amazing light pouring in (a quality of houses of this time)..and textures . i feel so cteative in new and diffetent ways...and it's so exciting. seeing what you have achieved - it is very affirming for me I love what you have created.

Could you add a faux 'log' store adjoining it, or a faux cupboard, to centre the whole thing in the space without moving the fireplace? If you added a shallow wall-frame to the right of the fireplace (same height, and extending to the right to create exact symmetry of the outside edge of the fireplace) you could some log slices in it to simulate a log store. Or just add a custom cupboard front to the right, so it looks like a part of the fireplace unit...

I’m not sure what you mean by decorating the fireplace, but I feel lining up the art with the fireplace will work better than in the middle of the chimney breast, as it is now.

I too would remove the mantel if possible and either do without or add a new one, symmetrical with the surround. I would put in a plasterboard wall on the left, from floor to the level of the top of the chimney opening (black area). Install shelves above in wood or paint in a deep colour - the horizontals will optically widen the area and give a more balanced appearance. When the skirting board is reinstated it will look altogether more pleasing.

Hi there yes I have a large rug but no room for chair at fireplace cos of the door . It just looks a bit off but obviously needs decorating. Just not sure if sofa , corner sofa or chairs would be best

Hi, I don’t see a problem with the fireplace not being central to a sofa. Looks like a lovely room. Could you post more photos, so we can get a better idea of the entire room?

A sketch with dimensions and location of doors and windows would be useful too.
