Gray is the new beige. Neutrals are necessary to keep a home from looking like a box of crayons, but do you really want to have your whole home painted neutral? Almost no one hates beige or gray, but I rarely find anyone who says "My favorite color is Gray!" or "I love beige!" I had a white walls and light beige tile floors for many years and people would come into my home and say how clean my home always looked. With all the natural light it did always scream clean! Now I have a maroon kitchen, purple undertoned taupe ceilings and walls in the main part of the home and blue greens in the bathrooms and bedrooms. My accents are blue greens, purples and reds. People come in now and say "Your home is beautiful", "Who helped you find these colors?", "Wow, I love your home!". My house is not what you will find in any magazine, it defies trends and will never be dated. I picked colors that I love and added a neutral that worked with the deep reds, blue greens and purples that I love. Picking the right neutral was really dependent on picking the colors that I love and finding the neutral that worked best with those colors. What is your favorite outfit. The one that makes you feel like you are walking on water? If it is a grey suit with a bright red shirt, then paint your home grey and have bright red accents. You want your home to reflect who you are, not what is popular today.

Hi Heather, I've looked into this a bit and yes you need a noncombustible surface if you want your woodburner fairly close to the wall (think you can go as close as 10cm then) . This website and article is really helpful to explain materials and distances: http://www.stovefittersmanual.co.uk/articles/rules-for-wood-burning-stoves/ If you've got the budget there are heat proof panels designed for the job by Vlaze - see these. If you're doing cheap and cheerful you can use hardibackerboard. Not sure if you can just paint it or what. However as you've said I think you can also use tiles!

Agree about injecting colours - at the moment it is a bland room without any focal point. From your photo the picture - whilst it looks interesting - seems to be far too large for this room, or at least on this wall. Swap it for a smaller one, and place it level with the top of the windows. Replace the curtains with colour, match the same colour or similar to cushions on the settee, and a comfortable (but not too big) chair in the corner. There looks to be some sort of chair there, which seems out of place. If finances allow it, I would also replace the coffee table, as whilst glass tables seem a good idea, they take up space but do not add to the atmosphere of the room. Feature wall or the whole room?

the whole room would be my go to and then you can move things about if you chose without being trapped by a feature wall. you can always add art and with files or stationery supplies taking up some of the space you will find it diminishes its 'power'. have fun and happy working :) ps i wonder why you are facing the window when having it accessible by sitting facing the lower wall would give you some flexibility with shelving etc.
