Please could you help me soften this ugly wall?!!!

Hello Houzzers

Would love some advice. I am wanting to create a flower bed and plant some ornamental style shrubs in front of the wall (which I am also going to paint now it has been rendered).

I thought of interspersing shrubs with seasonal bedding plants. Should I do a row of the same shrub or vary them? I want them to be evergreen shrubs. I like euphorbias, cordalynes, buxus but would welcome any other ideas. It is west facing with sandy soil. Thanks

Presumably you are trying to avoid the feeling that the garden banks steeply up to the house. For this reason I would likely avoid painting the render a crisp white in favour of a dark shade to echo the boarders and the roof or a stone colour to match the house. As far as planting I think you are on track with your ideas- personally I would repeat plants in threes or more to give move impact quickly. I would also add some taller bushes or trees that help you feel more private on the terrace- I would continue your theme of finding interesting and contrasting colour foliage and add acers, holly, photinias, Portuguese laurel, sambuca Nigra, Robinia Frisia, fatsia japonica, rhododendron and cotinus grace to the list to be considered.

Hi Jonathan this is really helpful thank you. I have posted another pic to show perspective as it is an even steeper bank that the original pics show! It is a quiet road and given the elevation I am not too worried about privacy. I will look up those plants thanks and appreciate the tip about repeating plants in threes

Hi, I really agree with the above statements about changing the roof to match your garage and potentially the door too. However, a cheaper and less time consuming solution could be just by adding some wall lights to the outside, to which would tie in with the rest of your beautiful homes features. Screening ideas for ugly wall please?

Thank you for taking the time to post everyone, there are some great ideas here! I do love a brick wall, although what makes this ‘ugly’ is the fact that the previous owners came onto our property to paint it (their choice). They cut in with a shade of cream then put their house up for sale without finishing the painting so now it’s been left patchy with lots of wires, pipes and central heating vents poking out of it. The new owners are not interested in doing anything to it but have said we can ‘do what we like with it’. The wall is actually the full side of their house which is a large - so the idea of painting it is one we hoped to avoid - although I really like the grey painted brick image (I’m not sure the ‘do what you like’ would extend to this) - it’s worth a shot to ask though! Greenery and lighting are definitely the way forward! I had thought of greenery (you’ll see the bamboo poking out the top of the hot tub, although a bit small) and outdoor mirrors to reflect light. It's further than I thought. My concern was the stepped in wall and also the opening to the dining area but as it's further up than I thought the ".entrance" should be fine. You would however be left with an alcove between new and old fire. I wonder what shelves would look like there (I couldn't find an exact pic) or just box it in.. Tadelakt is similar to polished concrete, polished plaster, microcement etc, you could look at any of them just to add a bit of texture/warmth. You could always pay someone to do a CAD design in your room if this is your preferred option? Having said that if you frequently have large parties maybe it's not a great idea to have a fixed structure there? Maybe a tv and fire side by side is a better option? Will see if I can find a pic

I have a similar cupboard behind the sofa, but the back of my sofa is quite high so luckily it’s not too visible. I think the bareness of the wall makes the cupboard stand out, so I think a nice big piece of art spanning the wall (not the cupboard) will make a huge difference. I’m also thinking painting that wall and cupboard a dark colour such as dark grey, navy or a deep blue-green. Examples below. That will really make the art stand out. I would also change the knob to blend with the new wall colour so a matt finish, not shiny.

Here are my go-to evergreen shrubs: Choisya ternata (you can also use the gold variety 'Sundance') - keep it clipped into a mounded to control size, beautiful, scented white flowers in summer, Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Goshiki' - looks a bit like holly and very tough, again, keep clipped - it won't grow too large and stays in a tight shape, Myrtus communis - again, white flowers, again holds a nice shape, but keep clipped so it doesn't get too big, Hebe pinguifolia 'Sutherlandii' - is a low growing mound forming Hebe with white flowers in summer, doesn't need pruning, pair the Hebe with Phormium 'Bronze Baby' for contrast - it's a smaller Phormium and hardier than some. Use some Hydrangeas and Paeonies for a spot of colour.

I would not use Cordeline as they eventually grow a stem and get very large and leggy.

Put in some grasses for texture - depending on how big you want to go. Smaller grasses - Pennisetum 'Hamelyn', Deschampsia cesspitosa, Stipa tenuissima. Larger grasses - Mischanthus, Calamagrostis. Cut back in late winter - very easy to look after.

Instead of annuals use low-growing perennials - die back in winter, re-emerge in summer, so need to re-plant each year. My favourites - Geranium 'Rozanne', Sedum 'Purple Emperor', Geranium 'Dragonsheart', Eryngium 'Bourgatii', Vinca minor, Teucrium lucidris, Heuchera 'Obsidian'. If you want some taller perennials use Salvia 'Caradonna', Helenium 'Wyndley', Kniphofia 'Tawny King', Veranicastrum 'Apollo', Echinacea 'Purpurea', Aster frikartii 'Monch', Iris 'Butter and Sugar'. Plant in minimum clumps of 3 and upwards in odd numbered groups. Add some early flowering bulbs and you should have colour year-round.
