Concrete finishing

Can you tell me the spec on the concrete finishing? Was it specified as sandblasted or some other surface prep to achieve the “smooth” look? I love it.

Hi there. So sorry for the delayed reply. Somehow this one got lost in the aether. That's a lightly sandblasted finish using un-tinted concrete. We've been using a swirl finish lately as sandblasting becomes quite disruptive to the neighbours!

Not too sure where you go with this now. You originally had the perfect scene for quality vintage. I can understand you not liking it as it is a very specific taste, but before you do any more refurb ask yourself and answer honestly, what look are you going for? What colours do you hope to use for decor, accessories etc. All of this needs to be planned before touching anything otherwise the space can end up a mish mash (lesson learnt for me on this!) Leave the brick walls that you have - they work with any look. Unless you are going rustic though I would remove the mantel piece. That way at least the room looks far more modern. With what you have left I would be going now for the hotel boutique-mod log cabin (think up market ski chalet) as the furniture you have already will work with this and you don't need to tinker any more. You can focus on styling especially by adding texture through rugs/thows/wall art (and it seems as if this is a very large room to style so keep your budget for that maybe.)

I would like to respectfully disagree with #4 - concrete is very tolerant to heat, however many of the available sealing options are. Though they've come a long way from 15-20 years ago. As well, I would add a water resistant additive to the concrete while mixing as well as glass fiber to minimize any future cracking. In most cases if you don't like the aging after 10+ years you can buff it and put a new color on if you want and reseal.

Option 2 Can I have the concrete finished to glue engineered wood straight down? Yes you can as long as there is a DPM Is an epoxy DPM sandwich something that is done with a self-levelling compound? is the floor not level with the rest of the house? First level the floor than apply a surface DPM Can I get away without two whole screeds considering the new concrete is at a good level? Is there anyway of salvaging the front room oak? No way of salvaging it I am afraid. You could spend hours to scrape it at back but it will be messy to save very little. And then you'll have to match a new floor with the old one. I’m also in the process of re-doing damp proofing that wasn’t done properly first time round so having the bare concrete now enables me to have the full Sovereign tanking system applied. I can’t afford to do this everywhere though, but I’m particularly anxious about moisture getting to the floor from the sides which is something it mitigates against. Are there other ways of doing this? I think that if you had problems with moisture in the past, you need to address it once and for all. Once the problem is solved through the house then you can look at ways of installing your wood floor. Floating floor fitted on top on an adequate moisture barrier and overlay will do the job very well and you won't be able to feel the difference with a glued down floor. hope this helps
