Show & Tell: Anyone in London a proud owner of underfloor heating?

I just purchased my first home near Clapham Junction!
It is a Victorian home that was previously rented; so it is detinitely in need of work. Given how extensive my planned renovations will be, I am debating about re-doing the place from literally ground-up -- starting with the floors. Though I have budgeted for the installation of underfloor heating with a faux-wood porcelain "planks" throughout my entire home (not just in the bathroom), wondering:
A) how does the flooring feel in comparison with real hardwood? In the winter are the tiles dreadfully cold when the heating is off?
B) given London winter temperatures how often do you keep your heat on? Did you end up realising cost savings?
C) Any local tradesmen recommendations?

I love it! It was worth the upheaval! We have engineered wood and in the bathroom - porcelain tiles and it feels just lovely! We initially did it just in the extension, but then we felt a noticeable difference as you walked from the old part of the house to the new part, we decided to dig down and to the whole of downstairs!

Not sure about the savings yet, but it is on all the time but at a very low level in the warmer months after Spring.

I dont have UF heating but my daughter has it in her kitchen and garden room. She has porcelain large format tiles in the kitchen and faux wood style planks in her garden room. It is lovely and very cosy underfoot. Lovely and cool in the summer. I suggest you get cosy sheepskin slippers for the days when you don’t have UF heating on.

I live in the Scottish Borders and three years ago there was a government incentive to externally insulate the houses. Due to the construction of the houses (poured concrete they couldn’t have cavity wall insulation ) . The difference to the heating bills is unbelievable but the look of the house is fabulous as there was new render put on new window sills and down pipes .i agree with the comment that just doing one house would stand out like a sore thumb but it just takes one to start the ball rolling . Maybe speak to your neighbours and they may want to do the same . All the houses in my street had the cladding and it has transformed the look of the street . I have since revamped my lounge and kitchen. There was nothing wrong with the kitchen cupboards so they where painted ,new work tops and sink . I did have a breakfast bar that took up a lot of room which I have replaced with a glass table . My next project is my bedroom which is getting refitted with new wardrobes and draws . Ex local authority houses are well built and have big rooms , they are worth buying as you can do so much with them ,I have bigger cupboards than the rooms that are in some new builds . This is my kitchen, it is so much lighter and more space . The back board is the same as the work top , so no tiles to grout .

Hi Rowen, I can't quite identify the knobs/handles in Claire's images (and there are quite a few others in this thread!), but we may be able to help source what you are looking for. We have a variety of hadle suppliers, but one of our favourite for "cup & knob" in a variety of lovely finishes is Crofts & Assinder - crofts.co.uk - a really great, British company with some lovely designs and finishes. Have a browse of the website and see if any are close to what you seek. If you give me an idea of which is the style you particularly like, happy to try and help. I haven't yet owned a Miele appliance, although I have used other people's and know that they are top quality. So I would love my first dishwasher to be a Miele and maybe this would convince my partner that having a dishwasher is an improvement on washing dishes by hand.

Hi Catherine, Every year there is a trade show called "Eco build". I visit every few years as I find it doesn't vary too much from year to year. It is in London and it is usually held in March. It is where I go to find suppliers of all my eco products and get new connections / see new products. This link shows all of the contributors that were there this year:http://www.ecobuild.co.uk/exhibitors I have used 2 companies in the past and wouldn't recommend them so I won't be putting their names here (don't worry they aren't on the list), but I would definitely search through this list and call a few people who you connect with and start the research process. I think your ideas are fantastic. Don't give up and don't let anyone tell you that its a bad idea / it doesn't work / its not worth it etc. Have fun and keep us all updated! Jo
