outside of house - need ideas
Shall I paint it ? Change the front wall? Plants? Is the wall down the side too low?? There’s the garage on the end as well that you can see. What colour front door? Windows? Any ideas welcome !!

5 years agoIt doesn't look as if the house needs painting? I might just paint the back garden wall a lighter shade of cream to try and break it up. Excuse the terrible photoshop but I just think you need some plants to break up the walls. I would go for a burgundy font door and I'd look at cafe shutters for both windows

Comments (8)Okay.I think putting some bright coloured cushions on the sofa( you could maybe keep some of your existing ones and just add a few new ones) would help. Also on the long wall where your tv sits I would buy a long unit,I'm thinking you may have to leave your tv where it is as the way your seating is arranged it looks like you will need to leave it there. You could put family photos and a lamp on the unit if you so wished. I have one with drawers and it's great for storage. Comments (7)Well, I really like your house! Love the roof and porch roof, full of character. There is a new type of render that is already coloured so never needs repainting. Maybe that can be applied on top of your rendering? You would have to check with a builder or decorator on that. The windows aren’t that bad, but if you want to change them to wood then do so, but they will need a lot of maintenance so think carefully. 5 years agoA bit of greenery peeping over the wall would look nice or maybe a metal arbour/arch at the beginning of the path with some climbers, say roses and clematis together. This will give a cottagey feel, but maybe not your style? Painting the house will be a long and expensive business unless you do it yourself. I think painting the front door in a colour you love will be more achievable.

5 years agoJust added a closer pic of the back wall as well. Feel like the wall is quite low. Makes me feel uneasy security wise. There are taller houses opposite this wall and they can probably see into the garden.
Any quick fixes to this other than making wall higher. Thought about tall shrubbery in the garden as suggested by someone before anyway. What else could I do for security? That wall is easy to climb.

5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoThere are planning rules for that adjacent to a Highway. Technically, you're not allowed to make them any higher without permission. However, I'm guessing you might get away with putting wooden boards ( i'd use wooden gravel boards - thick and treated for the outside ), between the block piers. As you'd only be filling in gaps, i think you'd get away with it.
The rules are:-Planning Permission
You will need to apply for planning permission if you wish to erect or add to a fence, wall or gate and:
- it would be over 1 metre high and next to a highway used by vehicles (or the footpath of such a highway); or over 2 metres high elsewhere; or
- your right to put up or alter fences, walls and gates is removed by an article 4 direction or a planning condition; or
- your house is a listed building or in the curtilage of a listed building.
- the fence, wall or gate, or any other boundary involved, forms a boundary with a neighbouring listed building or its curtilage.
You will not need to apply for planning permission to take down a fence, wall,or gate, or to alter, maintain or improve an existing fence, wall or gate (no matter how high) if you don't increase its height. In a conservation area, however, you might need planning permission for relevant demolition in a conservation area to take down a fence, wall or gate.
You do not need planning permission for hedges as such, though if a planning condition or a covenant restricts planting (for example, on "open plan" estates, or where a driver's sight line could be blocked) you may need planning permission and/or other consent.

5 years agoJuby I’ve used sage green in my living room and I adore it! It seems to go with traditional and modern design and it’s so cosy. I used F&B Cromarty, but all the paint companies have lots of versions of green. Dulux Overtly Olive is lovely too. Here’s my living room.

5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoF&B Modern Emulsion is very durable, and washable. Sticking to the F&B range ( a favourite of mine ), makes it easy to combine colours as the finish will be the same. It's more expensive than other paints, but you are very unlikely to need more than 2 coats, so i honestly think you save money in the end as it's a good quality.
Combine one of the light grey greens with a darker or mid tone for a super look. Also, have a look at 'Bone', it's not pictured here. but it's a light creamy grey green, also Clunch, it depends how light you want to go.Top tip..................F&B have just changed their colour charts, they are not as true to colour as the old ones.
Start with two light and two dark and see which ones you like, I like these four:-

Maybe just simply adding some outdoor lighting, could really change up the look of your home. This also adds added security to your living space which is always welcomed. I do also love the idea of a small porch, which could again break up and add character to your home.
