Is this original stone that was harvested the area or was it a product provided? If it’s a stone that was purchased can you tell us what it was, brand/color.

It was original to the cottage and not purchased. It is local pennant stone from the Bristol area.

Hi Gwen, If you are after a more modern and fresh look, I definitely agree removing the current fireplace and surround is a good idea. I am not sure if that involves the rest of the stonework along the wall and the TV area? If it is possible to remove these that is really going to help as well. If not no worries - I can show you how to update them later on. I also suggest changing the carpets and curtains to get away from the beige. They do look very 70s indeed! I would even go as far as painting the walls and giving your living room a fresh look altogether. If you are removing the fire sound, you may need to change the carpets anyway? Not sure but just wanted to throw it out there! Ok in terms of the stonework along the walls - if you can't remove them or its too costly the alternative is to paint it white, something like this: Let me know your thoughts? I am completely new to everything to do with interior decoration and find myself on my own a bit. I am trying to find out how much it would cost to get a stone brick mantlepiece and surround put around my gas fireplace. I have no idea who would even do that...I can't find any purchase options online. I know how I want it to look, but I don't know what the bricks are called/what the pricing options are for different kind of stone bricks...My googling has left me at a complete loss. I'm based in Glasgow. The fireplace itself is in need of some maintenance but is otherwise fully functioning, I'm just investigating how much it would be for the mantlepiece at the moment. Can anyone just even give me some pointers of where to look/who to talk to?

Here's food for thought......Everyone, or just about everyone, is doing white fireplaces and log burners. Not everyone has a gorgeous, and likely original, fireplace. So would you rather have a room that looks like everyone else's or a room that is individual? If it is the simplicity of your inspiration rooms that is appealing..... then simplify the room around the fireplace. Edit the items in the room to reduce contrast, you might then find that with a simplified room is more to your desired look.
