Challenging garden: small and on the slope
Comments (41)I begun to write this suggestion out when I released i had a drawing for a similar garden. So tweak it to suit Hide new steps behind new raised bed of rose carpet (or lavender) which are very easy to maintain which can also be used as seating Water feature with the spout can be hidden in the hedge, Use a galvanised mesh (heavy) an inch or so below water, you don't want children falling in. Skim walls to match in with new beds, the brick is a bit dull. Second level plant hydrangea From top of steps enter landing area to raised lawn, use angle iron for perfect straight lines. Low hedges: Use Rosemary rather than Buxus as it can have an unpleasant odour if planted on mass especially near patio areas. I would replace the fence with something sturdier and would allow for trellis which will give privacy but not annoy the neighbors by blocking too much light You could also use the trellis at low hedging to stop children falling off or use http://www.tecni-cable.co.uk/ systems for a safe but see through fence, it wont stop the determined child to climb over but will definitely prevent accidents Rather than having a 'veg patch' you could make sure that everything has to earn its keep. So plant fruit trees, berry bushes, vegetables, herbs and so on. If you need any help contact me. Regards Cian...See MoreWhat can I do with my front garden that won't cost the earth?
Comments (17)How about keeping the gravel as it is - it keeps the weeds down after all and is low maintenance but planting something like lavender through it - nice smelling, will soften the edges and required very little looking after except for a cutdown once a year - can't tell exact scale but 7-10 3l lavender plants planted through could make a big difference pretty quickly and inexpensively...See MoreGarden Design Advise Needed
Comments (84)Hi Eve, Well done for taking on a design project. Always an exciting challenge and by the looks of it you've done yourself proud. I know it's a bit late in the day to give any suggestions but perhaps you could put them to one side for a rainy day? Looking at your patio layout I would suggest a slight tweak in order to have some coherence with the circular or rather flowing feel you have tried to create. Notice how in my quick scribble I've taken out the sharp corners of the paving by making a curved edge, which is easily achieved by cutting the stone to suit the site, such as natural sandstone or preferably dark material such as slate. To hide the cut edges you can install edging cobbles or blocks with small low profile led lights interspersed between the edging blocks? Please see attached scribble to see what I mean. Second thing and this is of course completely budget dependent is because you already have a lovely stark white fence you might want to consider contrasting that with a dark material for your hard landscaping such as a nice slate or dark black limestone pavers? The planting looks lovely by the way!...See MoreSloping garden ideas
Comments (17)Update on our garden project! Thanks for the sleeper retaining wall ideas - we are very pleased with end result! See before and after picture. Still a few finishing touches to be done but getting there and finally have some grass growing after a winter of mud, mud, mud!!! Just need some bushes/plants to go along top edge of sleepers as it is quite a drop off the edge, dont want anything too big but just something to give it a bit of ad edge to save falls! Any comments or ideas what to use for this please?...See MoreAGI Landscapes
