Parquet flooring maintenance after sanding/varnishing

We have sanded our parquet flooring and varnished with Ronseal Diamond Hard floor varnish in a clear gloss. I would like to keep the parquet in top condition as I could not bare the sanding process again for at least 10 years!! The dust and clean up afterwards was unbareable! I have been reading online that you can buy protective coatings to protect varnish and there are also polish products too from HG which seem to have good reviews.

Should I now apply HG Parquet protective coatings, if so how often should this be applied? Also when would I use the HG p.e Polish - is this something that should be applied a couple of times a year?

We love WOCA oils… Danish… very good. Ronseal suggests you went to a DIY store. Did they not have anything there to compliment the lacquer/oil you used?

We think you'll need to establish the exact product you coated your flooring with and then check with WOCA and see what they recommend.

you used Ronseal Diamond Hard floor varnish
- A quick drying, water-based, clear floor varnish for most types of wooden floor
- Offers a tough, durable finish, ideal for high traffic areas in domestic environments
- Protects against knocks, scratches and spillages
- Resistant to household chemicals
- etc
I don't think you need to add anything else on top... maybe another coat of Ronseal to be on the safe side. Unfortunately, on site oiling or varnishing are never as durable as factory made varnishing, but the idea of having to apply another coat on top of a recently varnished floor is simply wrong.

Try on a small area first as varnish components may not be compatible.

Pine floors need a soft varnish, hard varnish will chip when it's on a softer surface. Personally I like natural pine. You could give it a pale grey wash or maybe a chocolate brown, to prevent it from looking too yellow once it starts to darken again (uv light). I'd stay away from the honey-caramel-tones, because it will go there on it's own.

Those are wise words Karen! am so glad it worked out for you. Love to see a photo, what colour or shade did you choose? Jools, The bitumen is a right pig, best way we found is to make it cold, so it becomes brittle, then you can scrape /chip it off. We used a window scraper, coarse wire wool and various sandpaper. We left the window open on a cold night, turned heating off in there, and you could try a cooler fan on it. Putting ice bags on it didn't work as well as we hoped. we used a round sander, but it can cause swirls, it's really awkward ! To be honest a few dips and scratches on an old floor are okay in the end, don't be too afraid of it, they are only pieces of wood stuck down on the floor, not bone china, as long as you try not to break them, or set fire to them, otherwise you can't possibly do more damage than I did, and they recovered!

Hello Camille, I suspect that the problem in this case was from failure to follow instructions. The instructions say two coats, and in this case vixbath admits (in the comments) that they only put one coat on before the floor was exposed to water. I'm sure we've all thought we could get away with something like that (I know I have, anyhow) but it does mean this isn't an accurate reflection of how well Osmo works. When I did my worksurface with Fiddes Hard Wax Oil the two coats went on very differently. The first soaked straight in and the second sat on the surface. From the way the two coats behaved I wouldn't expect a single coat to be completely waterproof. Also, I am very pleased with the finish and scratch resistance of the Fiddes and would use it on a floor. Hi You should be fine with staining or you can get varnish tinted to specific colour. I'd also suggest keeping the cut outs as you might be able to use them without spending money on new ones. thanks
