Curb Appeal - Help
We have a beautiful home, but every time I drive up to it, I can't help but think I don't like the curb appeal. I don't know if it's the color of the stucco (too dark?), the color of the windows (light green-is), the color of the wood on the door and at the roof line, or the metal roof mid-house line. Or maybe the landscaping?
Help, please! Any suggestions to improve the curb appeal welcome.

Comments (21)As far as the driveway is concerned you appear to have a sound concrete surface there already. If you can find a good local contractor who is properly trained in Resin Bonded Gravel then you could give you price to change the finish your driveway without digging it up at all. That would avoid a lot of cost and wastage so it is likely to be cost effective. The edging and any areas which are not would need to be considered carefully. A contractor may want to drill out core samples to check the thickness of the drive but it has been used for some time and not cracked then it should be fine. 5 years agoYou have a beautiful house. I agree that the color is dull. Lightening the stucco and painting the windows like in the photo below, would cheer things up. I would also paint the door a color. Not necessarily the teal, but something that makes you happy. Colorful landscaping around the door would be nice too.

Since I don't think changing the window trim is an option, I would consider carefully lightening the paint color to create more contrast I would also paint the lintels your stone color.

5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoI agree! This is a beautiful home. The lintels over 2nd story french doors and first floor mulled windows should be wood (stained), not wrapped in stucco. This will add interest to the full gable wall. I find that the post on the porch are disappearing against the stacked stone on the wall. I would replace the stacked stone post with stained wood post which will mimic the wood lintels. Both of these simple changes should give you the appeal you feel is lacking. Small, intentional, and true to architecture changes will go a long way.

5 years agoThe house has a nice upscale look, but the walk seems substantially underwhelming in comparison and needs to be widened. The plants at the right side seem obstructive which takes away from a welcoming feel. I would add a landing to the full porch length to suggest that the area is not off limits, but beckons. The concave bed line at the left side seems more stingy than bountiful. I'd flip that.
The trim color seems fine to me, but that is not to say that something else could not be an improvement. It's open to exploration. Where the color scheme loses me is at the top of the wall in the transition to the roof. I'd make fascia and associated parts white. I think there is too much sameness to the overall tones and white, mostly in shadow, would add a subtle liveliness. (I don't have any way to show it.) Maybe the rafter tails could be in contrast to that, but not necessarily.

5 years agoMamaweed, I think your home is beautiful and oozes character and curb appeal. I think the suggestion of making the lentils darker is a good one - something dark brown like your rafters. I would think you could accomplish that with a brown concrete stain . —- Where the left bed is curved, I think it would be wonderful to come forward a bit and , short of laying flagstone hardscape, you could carve out a bed that is in line with the one on the right and fill it with pea gravel or just mulch to make a “home ” for a concrete fountain. Your facade just seems ideal for a rustic fountain. You could enjoy the sound from your porch. ( The inspiration pic. is not to scale for your space, but just for an idea. ) — I think your entrance could use a lantern, either hanging or just one that would be seen from a side profile on the wall that is perpendicular to the front door.—- Consider making a small parallel bed on either side of your walkway and planting it with small/ short native grasses to visually expand the walk, give o neater appearance and outline/ highlight the walkway ( see grass at base of pillar in pic.) —- Loved Grover’s bright red specimen plant. I think anything red ,here and there amongst your foundation plantings , would be so pretty.
