Crepe Myrtle - can I cut the trunk?

I don't know which variety we have. We have owned this property one year. I was so happy to know I had a Crepe Myrtle!

This tree is mature, and was let to overgrowth, and was filled with Spanish Moss, which we removed, as much as possible last year. It has powdery mildew this year. I have been treating it by sprinkling corn meal on the roots, on the ground, watering it in. Spraying a solution of baking soda, veg oil, and dish soap in water on the leaves I can reach.

The Problem:

There is powdery mildew above where I can't reach -- it's about 10 ft tall. CAN THOSE AREAS ABOVE -- BE CUT OFF NOW, AS I WRITE -- MAY 22, 2019? The tree was pruned in Feb as advised. I keep taking branches off if the mildew is on them. And spraying what is looking green and good with the home-made solution. I started this treatment May 14, so I've done it twice. Another tree with Spanish Moss on it towers over it. :(

I would go on the RHS website www.rhs.co.uk they have a wealth of information about all the different forms of mildew, and how to control it. They give natural methods and chemical methods. Here’s a short excerpt of their advice, but there’s much more on their site. My brother (who I used to garden for) had sooty mould on a shrub and it just got worse, it was horrible. In the end I had to remove the shrub. I refuse to use chemicals so that wasn’t an option. Hope you get it sorted soon.

Looks as though you are in the southern US?
Do you mean can you cut the trunk back more than you have already? As you see they start to regrow easily. I would try by cutting one section back as far as you want, give it a year to see if it regrows satisfactorily and then if you’re happy with how it does then to do the lot the next year, or if it seemed too drastic, do over two years so the tree doesn’t get too much of a shock.
I’ve never grown one myself as I’m in the United Kingdom but it’s very common in the south of France where as street trees they are pollarded tightly every year. Drastic, but it works. However the trees are not as large as yours.
Can’t help with your mildew problem though.

Absolutely echo comments above regarding raising the soil level around the tree, a big no no as it will mean at best the tree will struggle and fail to thrive and will probably eventually die. Decking is a good solution if you want to install a seating area around the tree, with planting around it to soften the edges. I would maybe look at a composite decking as it will mean less maintenance and will not become as slippery as timber in a shaded area, also if going for a contemporary look it can look very sleek, especially if choosing a grey or even black. You could also add in some lower growing shrubs, herbaceous, spring bulbs etc and create a edge of woodland feel to this area, which would have interest and create a lovely view, whatever the time of year. Hi Beano, I think all of the HU accounts are just unnamed Houzz User accounts so there are quite a lot of them all with random numbering. As for surface mounted trunking there really isn't a lot you can do other than replace the trunking with something nicer looking or chase it in. You can get better looking trunking in a D shaped profile, it doesn't have to be the standard square stuff. The problem with changing to a conduit instead of trunking is you would have to re-wire every socket and switch to be able to thread the cables through the conduit. Maybe if the costs of chasing are putting you off you could do a room or a floor at a time, starting with the rooms you spend the most time in.

The conifers seem to be drying out the soil and many plants will struggle to grow there. Conifers do not grow from old wood so they are unlikely to green up again. If budget allows I agree that they would be better removed. Then you can add several bags of compost to improve the soil. There are some plants that will thrive in such an area such as Pachysandra, Vinca and Bergenia, but the RHS website will help you choose the right plants. Are you wanting to encourage wildlife? If so, you can use some of the logs from the chopped down conifers to create log piles in corners for hedgehogs, frogs and toads. Hello, I really like both Sonia’s suggestions. What way does the patio face? And do you know what kind of soil you have? As you are planting directly into a patio these will be important as you want a tree that will be happy as if it fails it will be a pain to get out! One thing first: newly planted trees need lots of water, and this is especially true if it is planted in a patio so will get limited rain: so make sure you include a watering tube that will deliver water right to the roots. I would suggest: 1: Amelanchier. Lovely tree that is easy to keep under control and delivers visual interest year round. 2: Cornus controversa. The wedding cake tree. Lovely open form - not sure I’ve seen it as a multi-stem, but even as a standard it stays quite small. 3: some form of cherry. Again, these are reasonably easy to keep small, and have beautiful bark that will look great with lighting. Also lots of year round interest.

Yes, temple 274 this tree is in central fl. And Yes, I did mean can I cut the trunk back more than we have already. Thank you for your advice, to cut one section back and see what happens. Since the poor tree is already in such stress with the mildew problem.
