Oven and Cooktop Configuration

Hi! I’m curious what size cooktop was used as well as what size Miele ovens were used in this project. It looks great!

Hello, thank you for your question. This is a bespoke kitchen, so we were able to design and fit the units to accommodate the appliances. The Miele hob is 900mm. Both ovens are standard 600mm wide with one being 600mm high and the other 450mm. Both have warming drawers underneath them. One being 290mm the other 140mm high. All sizes are approximate. These models are now discontinued. As of the 1st of June Miele have launched a brand new range of appliances across the board. The advice above is right because very few manufacturers make a double oven now so there is not much choice and they don’t seem to have controls or handles that line up. I think that you have a few options- you could stack the microwave and the double oven in a tower which is likely to be the cheapest- again the double oven may not match the compact appliance. You could have your microwave built under the counter somewhere else in the kitchen so that they don’t have to match. You could have a standard single oven and by the side a 45cm appliance with a warming drawer. Or you could have two side by side 60cm ovens with two 45cm appliances. Don’t forget that your appliances both 45cm and 60cm can be conventional or steam ovens or microwaves or grills or do more than one function. Or they could be sous vide ovens or coffee machines. Look at the Siemens website for inspiration and have a think about how often you need the various functions- for example you might decide you use a microwave so rarely that a cheap counter top model in the utility room would do and you fill the kitchen space with another full sized oven that gets used more. Alternatively you might add a single oven in a less convenient position for the rare occasions it is used- again this could be the utility room.

I think if it were me I would do a few things- firstly also post this dilemma on the US version of the site (when you set up your account you probably put the wrong setting and the site thinks you are in the U.K.) I would also be thinking about how you entertain- it it were me I would want a big kitchen island with stools opposite so cooking can be sociable and they can also provide casual eating at the same height as a chefs table further down the island. (I don’t know if you use that term but I mean a Chefs table to be a tall informal dining table with tall comfortable chairs for leisurely and sociable dining.) Personally I would put the formal dining table where the pool table is- I think a rarely used table is easy to keep well presented and makes a great first time impression if it is near the entrance- it is also nicer for guests to walk though a dining room than a living room to your personal space. I think I might use the wine wall idea as a divide between the pool table/formal dining area- with glass on both sides it just adds some separation without making the space feel smaller. As far as the nook in the middle I think how you use it depends on how you socialise- you could have it set up for playing cards, smoking ‘gars, star gazing.... but if it were my house I would have a round pedestal table in the middle and use it like a bar cart for your favourite spirits- with an ice bucket and some sliced fruit ready guests could help them selves which also makes entertaining easier

I always try to design a kitchen with worktop next to the oven tower for the reasons you state and I really dislike built under ovens due to their low height, but looking at your design, if the oven tower combination shown is correct it looks like a tall double oven and them a microwave above, your main oven is almost as low as a built under single oven so i don't think your gaining that much with the oven at such a low height in the oven tower. I'd also consider do you want a microwave so high up as well (wall height microwaves is another thing I try and avoid). Also to me the bank of towers doesn't look that symetrical and i don't like having the filler panel above the microwave, so if you do opt for the tower oven version I'd redesign how the towers look.

Removing the dw is definitely an option. The only issue with having that run go into the chimney (my husband has suggested this so I've mocked it up) is that the chimney breast is quite deep so to be able to stand in front of a unit, you need to be 600 away from the alcove wall. Which means the hob would need to go where the first unit is now to the left of the window. Having an extractor that's off centre might look odd? Unless I scrap it altogether (but the only opening window is really high up so needs that ventilation). I think ending the run into an alcove looks odd so would have to find a narrow 400 corner run perhaps so it doesn't look odd? It's the window that's a pain as it's huge and takes up all the wall space!
