Renovating DIY Gardens

Converting summerhouse

Hi all

I am looking for suggestion for what to do with this summerhouse and a step by step guide to getting in converted by myself (I don't ask for much). It looks nice from the outside but I have never spent time in it as it is just a little dingy and there are spiders and dead leaves everywhere. I was thinking of boarding it up to turn it into a little inside seating area. Any suggestions?

P.S. I am an absolute novice at DIY but happy to attempt to get my hands dirty.

Trim back some of the overgrown greenery.
Sweep and pressure wash.
Paint the wood with an out door colour- choose ivory or similar.
Buy a small table, chairs and hurricane lamp.
Add an electric light above the table like one of the recommended ones (Don’t forget to get it required to outdoor use)

We are moving to a 1970 built, open plan house which has exposed brickwork, lots of internal wood cladding and a first floor gallery overlooking the living area/kitchen/dining area below. It hasn't been updated much over the years so keen to retain the original architechural features whilst making more liveable for 21st century. The first thing is cavity wall insulation, then get the electrics rewired. It has a huge bathroom with seperate shower and bath, but needs updating and the carpet coming out. Need to put in a second bathroom/en-suite in one of the four bedrooms and would also like to replace the cheap and broken laminate that runs all over ground floor with oak flooring. Eventually, would like to go into the loft, there is room for a stair to it from the landing. The loft has a velux window and electricity already up there, so there is scope - but not the money as yet to do all this work! I love making houses look great, I have done it lots of times before, its really a privaledge to take a house and make it loved again.

nasmijati, yes good point, the concept is to have the glazing on view from a secure garden for the home owners eyes only, from the other side this barn looks like a normal barn. We are considering ‘intelligence glass’ which switches from frosted to clear at the touch of a button. Most gardens are in darkness at night with the views from the house looking out over them. So we’re thinking wouldn’t this design be a great focal point illuminated at the end of the garden perhaps.

Prune in March. Prune about one third to two thirds off down to an outward facing bud. However, Geoff Hamilton, an amazing garden presenter who is no longer with us, did an experiment. He pruned one lot of roses the conventional way above, and the other half was brutally cut back with a hedge trimmer! Both methods did the job and the roses grew exactly the same! Don’t prune now, as the new resulting shoots can get killed by frost and the plant will suffer, wait until the spring.

Thank you all so much for your kind comments! We’re thrilled! Sadly there was none of the bay window structure behind the garage door...I can’t believe someone would have wanted to take down a gorgeous bay and replace it with the hideous garage! We are lacking in storage now so thinking of building a little storage shed down the side of the house. I’ve asked for ideas on another thread of clever side/lean to storage ideas if anyone has any!m they’d be much appreciated. Thank you!

Hello again. I seem to remember you posting this dilemma before:). I’m no expert tbh but I think it’s do-able but depends how willing you’d be to lose the climbing plants. I’d go for a two step approach and clad the outside with a weather proof material (pressure treated boards, composite cladding etc., so long as it’s not too heavy). Then on the inside you could clad with whatever, plaster board or marine ply for instance, you could even put some insulation between the two layers (you’d have to remove the trellis). Problems could be the roof, looks like you have plastic panels which will lose heat making any insulation ineffective, and the upright supports, hopefully these are strong enough to support extra weight if you intend to re do the roof. You’d also need doors, either newly made or second hand to finish it off and if you do fully enclose it don’t forget to put a ventilation grille somewhere to stop condensation.
