Curtain hanging advice

Hi,

Im looking for some advice on the best way to hang curtains to make the most of my window.

Its a double sash window with some panelling at either side - I’m not sure if it counts as a bay window but almost.

I know I position the rod a few inches above the top of the frame but I’m a little more confused on the width.

I probably want the panelling on display as much as possible, but maybe should have the curtains covering the vertical frame sections otherwise they might look a bit lost? Or should the curtains fall at either side of those?

length wise I was planning to have a few inches on the floor as it seems the easiest to measure and not get wrong haha.

Looks like you have a simple yet beautiful room.

I’m certainly no expert on curtains but I feel if you have a rod nearly as wide as the entire wall, you can have the curtains open as much or as little as you like.

Does that make sense?

Yes as ED says, a pole the full length of the wall so when open they'll sit at each edge of the window and let the lovely panelling still be seen. And I'd go with floor length.
That said, are you sure you need curtains? A simple roller blind would be my choice for this window.

Fit the pole 3-4" over the window recess. This will then allow for the upstand part of the eyelet curtains and a space before the ceiling, although some older houses may have higher ceilings.

Good point about the size. Most of the metal parts of the contemporary prism light fixture over the dining table adjacent to these windows have a shiny silver finish (maybe chrome?), so that's why we originally went with white for the rod.

So, I have hung these on a pole with rings using plastic hooks through the gaps in the tape. They look OK, but would definitely be better slightly gathered as I do not have that many rings on the pole and taking it down to add more would be a complete pain. It is wrought iron, very geavy and extremely high. I need to rethink, but thank you all for your advice.

I think a blind would suit the window better than curtains. Roman blinds are very elegant and really suit period properties. Something like this

Thanks everyone! Yeah that makes sense.

I think curtains will add some nice colour, block out some more light and draughts - the old windows are pretty drafty and single glazed too. The simple look of the roller blinds does look nice though

As you don’t have coving you could use a ceiling mounted track such as the 3840 from Silent Gliss in conjunction with a ‘wave’ curtain heading, this will create the smallest stack leaving your lovely panelling on show. Try to get the curtains only 1cm off the floor for a luxe look and to stop early morning light bleed
