Floor board finishes?

Any experts on floor board finishes here?

We are having all of the floor boards on the ground floor of our house sanded and sealed.

One company uses Bona Mega lacquer

The other uses Osmo Oil.

Both are priced much the same

As I understand, the Bona Lacquer works a bit like paint - it sits on the surface of the wood, over time this lacquer can degrade especially in high traffic areas.

Osmo oil sinks into the wood and we have been told protects the wood and maintains the finish because its "in" the wood rather than "on" the wooden boards.

I'd welcome comments on the merits of either product.

As an aside, are white coloured floor boards considered old fashioned these days?

Osmo oils are great, done many finishes using it. Haven't used bona as we use loba 2k fusion lacquer.
Both depend on how well you're going to look after it ect. Oils will need re coating and looking after to maintain more often than a lacquer.

Thanks for the reply, looking for the benefits of a penetrating oil like Osmo against a lacquer. I would imagine that a lacquer that is painted onto the surface will degrade over time in much the same way that a paint would, especially in high traffic areas.

When you say it depends on how we look after it, what do you mean? Is one easier to maintain than the other?

Hi, I agree with Inside Studio. If you want a light floorboard you could sand them, then wash with a whitening or aging solution such as those from 'Blanchon', then finish with a pale colour enhances hard wax oil. This will give you a very light finish but at the same time a much more serviceable finish. Look up http://www.blanchon.co.uk/ or for the equivalent in the States try googling Hard Wax Oil.

Thank you the room is a through room between the hall and the stairs then the lounge. which are are open plan though I am thinking of a built in shelf unit under the landing beam. There is a lot of light in the day through the large picture windows either side. The wood is from the Woodpecker range and is Flink Dark Oak Plank. I would also have a rug along the floor where the main walk way is possibly. The house is an old cottage which has been extended and features added like beams and brick. I am looking to update it but keep the features. I have attached a photo of my downstairs cloakroom as an example!

We had a pro to partially board our loft last year and he used the loft chipboard panels from Wickes ( I know that because he left the stickers on). They are raised on loft stilts because of the insulation between the joists, this is to maintain the air flow above the insulation.

Hmm, only option would be to buy more boards (plenty of reclaimed wood companies) of the same type of wood and then fit them in.... But: 1. If you add them all at the end where its currently modern boards it'll look rubbish, youd need to lift them all up and then relay for brick effect throughout. 2. Boards of the same wood won't look exactly the same, lifting all then relay will help here as won't be a section of one type and then another, were you planning to stain at all or just sand? If sanding all current boards and new boards and then stain together it might help the matching. 3. New boards will unlikely be the required width so will need cut, do not attempt to so this without a circular saw, even slight curvature down edge will look v poor. 4. New boards MUST be the correct thickness, or you're knackered. Might be worth investing in a belt sander for floorboard sanding depending on how much you've got to do, can hire them etc. That sander is not really designed for that type of large, flat surface area.

Loba impact oil penetrates more than any other. Easier to use too
