lighting advice please

Hi all
my room is very strange! I'm getting the ceiling plastered but would like some advice on lighting.
I would like a ceiling light like the one in the picture over the table, but I'm struggling with the other half of the room.
I've got a lamp in the alcove.
Do you think wall lights would look ok ,in-between the entry to the living room?
should I consider spots over the couch( I'm not sure) or just reposition the pendent?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated x

Hi there,

Considering how low your ceilings are, I would suggest placing spot lights strategically rather than in a grid formation. This means placing the lights in the right places and where you would need them. I also recommend a dimmer switch.

Lighting is really important in the home if you are getting your ceiling plastered then I recommend you get this right first time as it extremely difficult/messy to move lighting once your ceiling has been done! I can provide you with a lighting plan according to your living room dimensions and furniture and can offer you a low cost option.

I think you can get away with a low hanging pendant over the kitchen dining table.

Hi Helen,

I think our cordless lamps would be a great solution for this problem. Instead of rewiring and messing around with new wall/ceiling lights you could introduce some cordless table lamps. This will allow you to move them around and re-position them with minimum hassle and you could even match them to existing lights if you wanted to! Hi Danielle It's surely a dilemma, although judging by the stuff you already decided on, it's going to be lovely either way. Personally I'm leaning towards a dark floor, even though we decided on a lighter maple floor for ourselves. Really liking Minnie's suggestion too though. Have you thought about engineered wood? Seeing you have chosen some lovely natural materials like marble I think real wood will actually show its worth and with some shopping around you can find a decent quality (the thicker the veneer the better) for similar prices to (quality) laminate. We chose engineered wood for our floors some years ago and it still looks and feels great. Perhaps for kitchen areas it will need sealing after installing however. Hope that helps... Keep us posted!

Hi Jonathan, Thank you, it’s certainly worth giving your design some thought, I really want the extension to be shorter, so I like the idea of widening it a bit. it’s a Victorian house and we want to keep as many original features as possible and in keeping so we won’t be removing the chimney breast or putting in bi-fold doors, but we could move the french doors to the end of the extension to look over the garden. I really wasn’t keen on a peninsular but I agree it’s a good use of space and this does get round the issue of two ceiling heights and the problems that will pose with the lighting. We can’t have a pitched roof so are definitely going with a lantern, the dining room will be staying as it is (except open plan) as we have a separate living room so we don’t need another dining space, but the extension could house the larder (housekeepers cupboard) and a sofa opposite if the extension was wider. Lots to think about, we don’t want to make a very costly mistake so thanks very much, I really appreciate you input.

Hi. It looks a lovely room. How are you finding the lighting in general? I'm only asking as you just appear to have 3 downlights over the sink, I'd probably expect more in front of that (not necessarily in rows), lighting over the breakfast bar etc? I'm just wondering if it's worth calling in the electrician? You can also swag lights rather than the spider style but I'm not sure it would work as well for 2 fixtures. Photos are difficult to load ATM but I'd choose either multi pendants or a multi light or something that disperses light along the table like a Sputnik style.

You could try hammerite. It comes in spray and brush-on formulas and is designed for metal. It should also be fine over the top of small rusty bits.

I agree with both of the above posts. You definitely want to get the lighting done right as it’s expensive to go back after it’s already done. Those rooms will also benefit from a couple of floor and/or table lamps to bring in the cosier accent lighting.
