I quite like its warmth and would go well in small furnishing touches in our new house moving to in Spring - it is fairly modernist, but has exposed brickwork and wood cladding, a slightly industrial feel. I like wine shades generally and wear them a lot. However, it could look a bit fusty in an older building, slightly faded and 80s chinzty even? I would definately be worried about it on walls, unless I wanted that feeling

Hi. I'd remove the breakfast bar. What may work is wooden shelves either side of your tall units using infills at the side so effectively a mix of these 2 pics. Use the shelves for stacking your bowls and plates etc with a couple of decorative accessories. I can't quite see though whether this gives enough space for the sink? Do you also have a row of plug sockets either side? If this isn't do'able what may possibly work is If you continue the worktop under those 2 cabinets. I'd get a tester of a similar colour paint and just paint underneath to see what you think. I'd then just a splashback behind the hob. I'd then add texture for accessories as colourhappy said. The lights don't appear to be placed suitably for a pendant so perhaps a swing arm or arc lamp over the dining table will add interest and height.

Hi, no probs. The thing is with upstairs you are governed by the stairs and the drainage. You can't move either without great expense. To gain more room, better bathroom etc, you would have to sacrifice a bedroom on the right of the plan. Is this an option? The simplest solution is just change the bathroom / toilet and add a shower:- If you need further changes for whatever reason, after all 1 bathroom for four bedrooms isn't a lot, then all I can think of is to split the master in to 2 rooms as it has windows front and back. Then remove the bathroom and make it smaller, giving the bedroom top right a little more room. Make that the master with En-suite and use the bedroom bottom right as the family bathroom. The three smaller bedrooms are an ok size so, in theory could work.

Thought I might demonstrate why a concept planner is such a good idea:- If you add an extension, you have to think how you are going to use the space, what you need in it compared to what you'd like in an ideal world. Adding the full width extension and not changing anything else, I don't think will work. It leaves so much 'dead space'. You could move the table in to the extension, and add more kitchen? but you've got no wall for a t.v . Plus, the kitchen remains inadequate. So:- Currently the kitchen is small................you could do with a utility room for a growing family as well as the downstairs toilet. The plan has to show the nibs in the wall that the steel sits on holding up the outside wall, and the room has to work around these. If you go with completely open plan, it's hard to place a sofa and have a comfortable T.V area, because it cuts down on the number of available walls for furniture. Thus, in my opinion creating corners is essential. It's a proven fact that 92% of the time, the doors will be shut. The doors are expensive and whilst they let in a lot of light which is good, they take away furniture space. So, I began to think about a Utility, bigger kitchen, dining space, t.v space etc...........and, bearing in mind, I am no expert in this field, I came up with this as a rough idea...........it 's a big leap from the space there at the moment, but if you're going to all that expense, then it should be worth the end product. I am sure a proper concept planner would think of all sorts of ideas. so this is just an artist impression of what might be possible. I cut down on the bi-folds and added a more private T.V area with wall space for the T.V a niche for the sofa, dining table etc. Gained more kitchen space and an all important separate Utility.

Why not just have another room?

Instead of having to contend with the sounds of the kitchen; pots & pans, crockery and cutlery all clattering, the sound of the extractor, dish washer or washing machine. Not to mention the smell of cooking or frying. Why not find a more restful space? Why would you choose a snug that isn't snug?

We have a sofa, armchair and TV in one arm of our L shaped kitchen/dining/living room. It’s great. The kids can watch tv while I cook tea and I can talk to them/them to me without shouting. If guests come round, they can sit and chat on the sofa/armchair, and whoever is making cups of tea or preparing the next meal in the kitchen is not cut off from the chat. In the evenings, one person can sit on the sofa while the other cooks or washes up so they have company. In other words it’s a way for people to be together more.

However, it’s important to have a separate living room for when you want peace and quiet.

Not entirely sure what a snug is. To me, a snug is a cosy enclosed living room, not something at end of a kitchen..... I guess you can have doors from kitchen opening to a snug? I like them as an additional living room but definitely not as the only living room.
