Whats the most effective way of clening york Stone paving slabs?

We havew had a patio laid using natural york stone, looked great when first laid but we didnt seal them and now they are green and brown with stains, how do i get them back to thier original colour?

I would not worry too much about not sealing them - the argument still rages as to how much of a benefit or nuisance sealing is.

The first step for cleaning is to simply try jet washing them with a domestic jet wash that you can buy from a DIY store. Be careful not to wash the mortar between the slabs too aggressively because depending on your washer, it can damage it. If you have a lot of algae and stain marks then it is probably worth adding in a proprietary cleaner as well.

It is worth getting one from a supplier of stone, rather than a generic one from the DIY store as you want to make sure it will do the job but not damage the stone. I don't know where you are in the country, but London Stone are a good choice in the South East

Like carpets, patios do need cleaning a couple of times a year, depending on how clean you like them to look.

I would use a so.ution to clean patios widely available, spray that on first the jet wash, alternatively if the slabs are old and the marks are pitted you may need to sandblast.

i would always wash afterwards with an algae repellent for longer lasting effect

hi, We are having a family reunion this July, and on the first day we've planned a picnic for approximately 200 family members and friends. It will be held on the grounds of my weekend home that was built in 1912. so I decided to create an outside living room and dining room. and I wanted it to blend in with the greenery of the grounds. so what I did, was took old furnishings that I wasn't using or I had stored up and transformed them into outside furniture. for instance, I took an old sofa and had in upholstered in a durable canvass type white fabric that's for outside use. I even skirted the sofa. I then used throw pillows of different patterns but using color schemes of turquoise, apple green and yellow. i covered the chairs in patterns of the same colors. i purchase outside rugs in turquoise and white to set the cocktail table on and the dining table. i covered side chairs in bold coordinating fabrics using the same color scheme.. i painted the side tables and dining table, as well as picnic tables in white....using an oil based paint and sealing it with a clear poly coat. i painted the dining server in turquoise, and the dining chairs in a yellow...it looks amazing, fresh, tropical and timeless. so this is something you can consider for your outside space. I wouldn't paint the fencing white - if its a sun trap I think it will bounce the light and be so so blindingly bright! - it also shows all the dirt - we have a white picket fence and it needs repainting so often =( I would be temped to paint the fencing a green or grey colour and cover with trellis and pretty climbers. Or I've seen lovely wood fencing which silvers over time - it would be a bit softer than brilliant white. Re slabs - Look on ebay - we have had lovely slate slabs off their before. =D or reclamation yards. You could have a paved sitting area AND pebbled area with plants. Do you want any height to the plants to add privacy or a bit of shade? I think I'd be tempted to have a tree in a HUGE pot or some bamboo

Thanks minnie! Great image and great idea about copper! I just love the idea of having some warm light, but yes I guess it might not sit too well with a really contemporary garden. Great image as well sootsprite! The bright colour really help to light up the space...that gives me quite a few ideas of what's possible. Thanks seasonsincolour, I'm definitely not up to installing any lighting ourselves. We're probably going to just about be able to clear the garden of the plants and that's all we can do. I'll definitely be investing more in lighting though because I'm going to be so jealous all day of the sunlight falling into my neighbour's garden I'm determined that we will be using the garden as much as possible at night as well. I'm thinking nice lighting, eco friendly patio heaters (if there's such a thing) and cosy garden furniture including a swing seat.

Hi original poster! I know it’s 7 years since you asked this but would love to know what you did. We are not in a similar position with a similar looking house at the back but even steeper. I know that a full extension and lowering the internal floors would be ideal but we can’t afford that and need a 5-7 year fix. Please let us know what you decided and why ☺️

Guys, thank you for your comments and suggestions, after a lot of research I went with a company called Patio Black Spot remover, and whilst expensive to do the area of slabs I have the end result is brilliant, the slabs are back to what they were when first laid.
