Are you itching..........?

..........to get out into the garden again and get down to some serious gardening?

The weather here today is particularly sunny (not very warm though) and my thoughts are turning to all the work that's going to be needed in the garden shortly. And although I'm not able to do a lot with my poor mobility, I'm itching to get out there and do what I can and....ahem........'motivate' my O/H. LOL

My daffs are coming up and my tulips are making an effort and I'm straining at the leash to get going with pruning my roses and our new mini cherry tree, to cut back things like the penstemons ready for the new growth and to give my box balls a good going over and their first clip. I can't wait to get the water features operational again.

We've got a massive bare patch on the lawn around the base of the bird feeder, where the pheasants and wood pigeons have picked up the dropped seed, which needs some remedial seed sowing - the lawn being his pride and joy the OH is not very happy about it, I can tell you!

what are you keen on getting going on out there?

It was beautiful here too. I spent some time pinching out the tips of the clematis to encourage more growth, tying in some stray growths on my climbing roses, inspecting the tulips that are coming up in the hope of reminding myself what colour they will be! I also needed to check the potted plants were not waterlogged after Thursday's all-day deluge. I have a problem with the wood pigeons marching around under the bird feeders so I purchased a bell shaped plant support that will go under the feeders and hopefully keep the pigeons out.

I was out there yesterday tidying up and preparing an area for new plants where a new fence has been erected. It was lovely and warm. Like you, I cannot stand for long or walk far, too ouchy, but I managed to weed that area with a long handled weeder whilst sitting down. I also planted a dwarf cherry which is tiny but in flower. Well my OH dug the hole and I supervised! This morning I pruned the Butterfly bush and I’m pleased with myself, so I cut off the long shoots and then sat down chopping them all up for the garden refuse bin. I can only do little bits at a time, but I’m a quarter of the way round! Then I ordered some plants from Crocus which will go in the bare area around my teeny tiny cherry tree!

No bidet's for us, particularly when the room contains a relatively large shower, We like to then use a 2 outlet shower valve which can control a handheld shower situated at waste height in the enclosure. As others have said, the European market has moved away from bidets, with the new craze being toilet seats with the technology to wash and dry. We have supplied both the Geberit and Duravit versions over the last 12 months with great feedback.

vv0123, I have two silk duvets. The double was an expensive make bought in a sale - 4.5 tog - light and cool and drapes well, so warm in winter too. I get hot so use it in winter and use a thinner 2.5 tog cotton filled one bought from Lidl in summer. I bought a silk single one for around £50 on ebay but it isn't the same. It's heavier (though the same tog rating) and the stiff cover material creaked when I moved so I had to get rid of it. If you're buying silk go for quality. I also have a thin hemp-filled one from John Lewis, but don't like it as much as the cotton.

If the utility becomes a dumping ground currently - at least you can close the door to it . If you open everything up then all that dumped stuff will just be visible to all surely? Why not look at what’s dumped - is it laundry ? Is it waiting to be ironed ? Or waiting to be taken upstairs ? Or dirty washing to be sorted into colour/white/darks etc. If so - redesign the utility to have an ironing board area and shelving for folded washing, and sorting baskets for dirty laundry, hanging pole for ironed shirts on coat hangers etc. If the stuff dumped is outdoor coats boots dog walking stuff etc then it might be better to design a boot room space instead ? Do you see where I’m going with this? The space isn’t currently working - so yes - some redesign is required - but needs lots of looking at WHY it’s not working in order to fix it properly. I’d suggest you go though this in great detail. Look at what’s wrong and then start making it work better. ( this is the sort of project we often work with clients on ! You aren’t alone !)

Scratching my head mostly 😊 but weather permitting I’ve been out in the garden for the last couple of weeks. Pruned the roses as they’re putting on new growth quite early this year and removed the choisya that had been ripped out the ground by the storms (fitting an 8ft tall shrub into my diddy little car to take to the tip was fun😂). Dug the ground over and in its place I decided to put a camellia that wasn’t doing so well in it’s pot and a small Daphne (eternal fragrance), and as a back up a bought a tiny choisya for a quid which I’ll put in a pot. I’ve also have a small cherry which was a gift but I’ve no idea what variety it is or where to put it! I gave up trying having a nice lawn, dog just decimates it. Lots more jobs to do this year including a lot more landscaping but grounds a bit too soggy for that yet. Need to get some window sill seeds going for summer and hopefully this will cover some of the the ugly wall🙂.

Loving all the daffs and tulips coming up, it’s my favourite time of year. Sparrows are really busy gathering nest materials, our resident wood pigeon just sits in the bird feeder tray and scoffs everything!!

I’m also looking forward to getting back into the garden. I did a very small amount the other day and cut my first daffodils yesterday. The tulips are coming, but no idea yet what colour they will be. I mixed them all up when I dug them up last year so it’ll be interesting to see what comes up!

I’m off work tomorrow so might start planning the cut flower garden. A small section of it is given over to potatoes, but there’s plenty of space for the cut flowers. I did all sunflowers last year as my son got married and I was asked to grow the sunflowers for them. This year I want to go back to the meadow type flowers I had when I started growing cut flowers. Cornflowers and poppies I love. I also got some Bee Bombs which will encourage bees when they grow.

I might try growing a few vegetables, but that will limit the cut flowers. The fruit bed is full with raspberries, rhubarb and red and black currants.

I’ve always appreciated a lovely garden but it’s only since we’ve been in this house that we’ve had good loamy soil which is easy to dig and is rich in nutrients. So now I’m enjoying gardening in a way I never did before. Roll on spring weather!
