White Silestone Quartz recessed drainer or not and staining

Hi all,

Urgent as we are getting worktop measured for tomorrow morning! Real use advice would be appreciated most :-:smile:
I will summarise:

1. We chose Miami White Silestone quartz. Beautiful. Will look amazing.
2. Got a call from installer just advising us that the recessed drainer may be more prone to staining from foods/red wine etc.
3. Now we are thinking no drainer, or grooves
4. We just had grooves in last granite worktop. They were useless and pointless.
5. Some info from Silestone website:
"Because quartz countertops are made with around 6-10% resins, they are non-porous and never have to be sealed."
"Water and other liquids will not stain a white quartz countertop"
"Quartz is chemically inert, which mean that it does not react to most chemicals. Because of this physical and chemical property, there is no need to worry if wine, citrus juices, or many common cleaning materials come in contact with the surface."
6. All very reassuring until you read about some people having issues with staining and even the installer has advised that it may occur.
7. We are happy enough to to wipe up after all spillages etc. It is just the recessed drainer that has thrown us.
8. We are thinking, because we have a large sink 55cm x 40cm we could have an over sink drainer (we we could store away) and a mat possible if too many dishes. We have a dishwasher too (slimline). The having no recessed drainer would also give us more work surface as it is a very small kitchen.

Is it madness to not have a recessed drainer or drainer grooves?

Thank you so much everyone. We are going with no grooves or recessed drainer! Feel a lot more confident in my decision.

If you wash dishes at the sink and leave them to dry I would say grooves is fine. If you do not use a sink to wash dishes then it is pointless.

If you are short on worktop space then I wouldn't bother with the grooves at all.

We have had ariel silestone with grooves fitted for about 6 months and I do find the grooves do stain and are pretty pointless. If I could go back I wouldn't have grooves.

I've changed my mind 3 times as Quartz is white and I'm afraid of water staining in the grooves but when it came to it i would need a drainer to sit beside sink if i removed grooves and as its in Island and v visible I don't want an ugly draining rack there so I put grooves back in

To be honest, I can't remember if it was absolute or glacier. One of them had an almost plastic look about it as it was so white (maybe absolute?). Ours looks pure white but if you look really close, it almost has tiny pale grey speckles which aren't really noticeable but takes away the plastic look.

I currently have silestone blanco zeus 20mm. Assume that’s similar? IMHO it’s beautiful and doesn’t look plastic at all. It has a sheen on it that makes it very clearly a stone product rather than plastic. I love it so much that I will probably go for the same in our new kitchen later this year as I’m not a huge fan of “pretend” marble. The only problem with it is that it has a tendency to stain - tea is a particular problem - usually cleans up with some cif and elbow grease but we do have some permanent stains. It’s not as impermeable as Cosentino claim.

So, without recess/grooves do you think there would be much issue with water dripping into cupboards/drawers? I can’t imagine it as the would be a drying mat. The only reason I see for a recess etc is to channel the water into sink from wiping down counter.

I have groves and again wouldn’t bother if I was doing it again. However, I hardly hand wash anything, most goes in the dishwasher. I haven’t found they stain but I clean up a lot.

When I wash items that don't go in the dishwasher, I find the water just sits in the grooves. My problem is I don't clean the water up so I'm not tidy enough for grooves!

We have marble, and have no grooves or drainer. We bought a Bodum off white silicone drainer mat - it works well and doesn’t stand out in the kitchen.

I advise my customers not to bother and have the extra worktop space and use a tea towel or mat to put any washing up on. The grooves don't have enough fall in them to drain the water away so it just sits there and you get lime scale build up and they're harder to clean up.

With the recessed drainer again the water will just sit there as there isn't the fall to drain the water away but the water won't drip over the edge. Again you lose so much worktop having this and its an additional cost, much more expensive than just the grooves. I think your installer is giving you good advice.

Quartz is 100% sealed compared to granite and marble, but i'd still be careful and clear up any spills especially anything acidic and also not put hot pans on it, don't use it as a chopping board with sharp knives etc and it will look as good as new for years to come.

We've got grooves but put a drying mat over them so for us they weren't needed
