Sunny family garden ideas

We have a south west facing garden, which is great but we don’t have any shade in the garden near the house so it can get quite hot through the patio doors.

I was thinking of adding a small blossom type tree near the house to make the garden a bit more interesting and also provide some shade, but I don’t know how and where to do it with out it looking like I’ve put a tree randomly in the garden.

It would also be nice if we made our garden a bit more interesting and aesthetic but I also don’t want to add to much work for maintaining it.

If anyone has any advice or suggestions that would be brilliant!

Pretty garden. I would be wary of planting trees too near the house as roots can spread, although there are some trees such as ornamental cherry or fruit trees that are grown on a dwarf rootstock to limit their height and spread. I have a dwarf apple whose maximum height is 10’ and a dwarf ornamental cherry which reaches about 7’.
To create shade on hot days I use a large parasol which really helps. You can even get ones that fix onto the house. I also have an awning at the back of the house which shades the house a little, I wish I’d bought a bigger one, but there you go!
This is the tree I have, mine is tiny at the moment but growing fast.

7m x7m precludes palms really and don't forget Date Palms and Washingtonia are both affected by the Palm weevil and will need regular treatment. If you don't live there full time and are unable to get regular maintenance carried out, go for indigenous succulents and things like grape vine ( I have 5 huge vines at my house on the mainland, they make beautiful shade in the Summer, produce kilos of grapes and the only care they get at the moment is a trim in the winter and a thorough watering in the Spring as I am only there twice a year until I retire there next year). I like the look of Bougainvillia but it can tend to overgrow a small space and is unpleasant to trim back with its spiteful thorns, Wisteria is a better bet for a climber but takes a while to establish and produce flowers. Lantana, Plumbago and geraniums are all indigenous and do quite well without too much care, there are also some dwarf bamboos that do well in hot dry conditions, common Ivy does well here but is invasive. I know that there are a few good garden centres around the outskirts of Palma so go and have a look around,many of the labels give you good information about habitat and growing conditions and I am sure the staff would be only too happy to give advice. I have lived on Ibiza for the last 13 years, it is a little more humid than some parts of Mallorca but if your place is to the West of the island closer to the mountains that will also be fairly humid, there are plants there that have evolved to survive on the moisture from the nightly dew. There are also a lot of ornamental grasses that will grow with a little irrigation, some of them change to fantastic reds and browns toward the end of the Summer and produce beautiful seed heads, a range of Ryes, Timothys and fescues would give a layered effect. A late thought, looking at your photo, if you have trickle irrigation you can install some of the pockets for a vertical garden on one or more walls of the yard to produce a lush, cosy atmosphere. Hi snthouse. I drew up a couple of ideas earlier. Not to scale or anything and I’m no garden designer but it’s a hobby of mine and hope it gives you some ideas. Just noticed your drawing, I thought it might have been a bit squarer in the corner (hard to judge from photos) but I think you can adapt to suit. Main objective was to provide privacy whilst still letting light through and one solution to this could be by using screening. This could either be with plants/ trees ( might be too bushy/ take up space) or using a structural element which is partially open for light. I’ll post some ideas for screen ideas in next comment but here are my sketches. If you’re wondering what something is then let me know (I just have these visions in my head 🙂.)

I made two different layouts of your house. Hope it may inspire. Left: First floor similar to yours, but some tweaks on the wardrobe and ensuite area, to make better use of the space (in my opinion). Ensuite is 170cm wide, so either walk-in shower or bath tub would fit. Hinged or pocket door, I'm not set on a type. Created a landing cupboard for towels and such. Utility could be a bit wider, as 160cm is tight. Hallway has a shelf or shallow shoe cabinet next to the front door, more place to stand and welcome people. Coats with bench can go a bit further in. Lounge rotated as interior psychology makes us feel more at ease when we can see who's coming in. Kitchen in C shape, nice looking hutch opposite, tall units in the middle of the room, bench with storage (under and above) top right with table. And an extra sofa. Right: First floor completely different. Extension has two smaller bedrooms and new bathroom. Two bedrooms on the right turned into master suite, bathroom wall moved over to the right. Again added a landing cupboard. Kitchen diner with an island looking into the room (though the whole thing could be rotated ccw if you don't want the sink to go under the window), round table with very comfy chairs, so a sofa is not required. Yeah, sorry my drawing isn't accurate, just my best attempt using some free software. The measurements on the rightmove advert say; Kitchen/Breakfast Room - 6.17 x 4.20 (20'2" x 13'9") Dining room - 6.28 x 3.62 (20'7" x 11'10") - not sure how this is slightly longer than the kitchen/breakfast room to be honest! There's a wall inbetween the two rooms which I'm looking to knock through. The 4.2m includes the utility space so i've estimated it at about 6m once the wall is gone and excluding that area. Does that make sense?
