Is An Open Plan Kitchen Still A Good Idea?

I'm going to remodel my kitchen. And I'm thinking whether or not I should plan for an open kitchen. Would anyone explain if it's a good idea to make an open kitchen nowadays?

When you say open plan do you mean including other rooms into the same area? Are you thinking of including a dining area or/and a lounge area?

For me it depends how big your house is, what other rooms you have, how many folk live there. I wouldn't do open plan if I didn't have another proper living room. I have an open plan kitchen/dining room. After a large eat with guests I like to be able to shut the door on it sometimes if it's a mess and go to my tidy living room.

@ Sarah, the length of our units is 4.2m and it is actually two long oak planks (I think about 2.5m is about max that can be sourced). The connecting line is visible a little. I approached a bespoke kitchen company, who got the planks and also oiled them to the desired colour (matching our floors). They did a fantastic job: CKW London – Creative Kitchens and Woodworks Ltd.

First of all, what do you need in this space? Kitchen/dining table? Are you putting in a new kitchen so the whole layout can change? I really dont think you should be considering extending until you know how you are going to use the space you already have and whether or not you actually need more space. I have saw many posts on here with extensions that create BIG spaces and find they dont know how to fill or use the space as it wasnt really planned. I think 28 sqm room is ideal for a kitchen/diner - it is what we will have - you should be able to fit a good kitchen and dining table there. You wouldnt fit any living space, but they you dont need that. Could you sketch a plan of how the current floor looks? Are there now 4 doorways into that room? I assume you blocked up one of the doors from the hallway?

Depends on how much work you're willing to do? But I think turning the stairs into a straight run would be your best bet (so turn the first flight against the wall). You'd have to move the WC (possibly under the new staircase, or up one level). You'd need a structural engineer to have a look at things like your joist runs, etc. and you may need to put a steel in to support the upper levels, but if it were my house and I had the money, that's what I'd do. Then, if you have the room, I think I'd put a porch on the outside of the house, rather than having the internal one, just gives you more squared off, usable space inside. Good luck!

Hi, you could knock through kitchen and living room - you’d have a lovely kitchen/dining/living space. Then have the existing dining room as evening lounge or snug. Depends on your family situation I think as to whether you want the stairs off this room. You have a lot of doors - blocking one or two of them off would obviously give you more wall space to play with for furniture. Alternatively, knock through kitchen and dining room together; and have a glass wall where I’ve shown, so that your stairs are off a new hallway. I saw something on Houzz but I can’t find it now, where they’d done something similar to let light in; think there was a nook for a desk or storage in the hall too. Good luck x

I have been thinking about this in lockdown. I imagine it could be very noisy for everyone. I think a large kitchen is lovely and opening onto outside space. but the ability to properly shut off areas is a must for me.

I think it is a lovely idea especially for kitchen and dining room combo. It would work best if you still have a separate or additional living room, especially if you have more than one person in the house hold and do not want to be watching and listening to the same things all the time.

One other thing I would point out is you will want to have quite appliances, nothing worse than trying to watch the telly or have a nice peaceful meal when the washing machine, dishwasher or hob extractor are on and very noisy.

If space allows have a nice big kitchen/dining/ living area, but ideally also have a separate living room/snug and a utility room to house washing machine etc and downstairs loo.

We love open plan kitchens, with soft seating areas and dining all in the same room. You do have to just think about the kitchen style. We have found that the 'Gloss' kitchen is not as popular in this scenario. As when you are sitting on the soft seating area, you don;t want to feel like your sitting in a glossy kitchen. The trend is definitely more mat laminates and matt lacquered doors when you do this. The kitchen then blends in more as 'furniture' then a kitchen.

Another trend that we are seeing more and more of is, half height divides. Either from mid-height studwalls or from cleverly designed units/banquette seating from the kitchen. It breaks the vast space up and creates pockets of space.
