Paint Living Rooms Renovating

where should I paint up to?

Hello,
just need a bit of advise, in our family room we have a dado rail on the ceiling.....wanting to paint the walls a light grey.....do I take the grey up to the dado rail leaving only a small amount of the ceiling white or do I just take the grey to the start of the ceiling like you would normally?
advise please!

I wouldn't describe that as any type of dado, that is just ceiling coving which is generally treated as part of the ceiling, painted same colour as ceiling.

However you do whatever you want with it..... its your house!

Yes it is coving which is usually painted the same as the ceiling.

It depends on your planned floor covering. If you are fitting a Ditra decoupling type membrane and and electric heat mat and using a 12mm tile it might be just about okay, if you are fitting a timber floor then it will need to be at least 18mm thick engineered wood with a decent underlay and you may still need a finishing Scotia. If you were planning to tile straight on top or fit a carpet or thin laminate type timber then it is too low. Your options are to fit levelling compound to bring it up to the required level or of you are planning to tile it your might consider raising the level with tile backing insulation boards which are not much more expensive that levelling compound per mm of built up and have the advantage of insulating your floor (even if you already have insulation bellow the screed it helps) Good Luck Terry www.onthetiles.biz

I would leave it as it is now: up to but not including the picture rail. It highlights the picture rail and cornice when they are left in white and contrast with the wall colours. If you paint them it will just all blend in to one colour and you will loose the classical aspect which is quite important for a Gentlemen club look. I would however paint that wall that doesn't have a picture rail all the way up to the cornice as it would look odd otherwise. Hope that helps! Anthony

You can use a jelly based paint remover which you apply and scrap off. It was traditional to paint stairs like that until the 1960's. The white gloss border was to allow you to see the stair in poor light (candles), the later brown colour was in fashion in the 1960's when you had a runner of carpet with the brown at each side of the step. On saying all that I would carpet them and save you all the work :)

Its got no coving as such like normal - its like an indent from the ceiling, that's why i was asking.
