DIY alcove wardrobe issue

Hello, we are fixing up our first house, which is a flat in a Victoria terrace and I am building alcove wardrobes in the bedroom. I have almost finished one side and need to start the other side now. The issue is that this wardrobe cannot be as deep as the other side due to an exterior door and door frame. To fit a rail and hanger it is going to need to come out a little, but I am worried this might look odd, any tips for negotiating this corner? Apologies for the poor images, tried to show the almost finished side and then the frame in question.

But isn't the hanger side in the alcove and the shelving on the door side? (as in: I don't see a problem)

Sidenote: We have 40cm deep ikea pax with rods to hang stuff sideways.

Bespoke joinery is always better to achieve maximum of storage from space you got. However with PAX there is option to match up for saving cost, however you are limited to size, if you got 190cm you need to fit 150cm and have covering panels. We did in few houses to get lower cost build in units, that we put it in PAX wardrobes and we made bespoke side panels and framing, skirting so when you close them it looks like bespoke, where inside is still IKEA.

Hi Minnie There will be drawers in the double wardrobes on the either side of the triple wardrobe. so I don't really need to have them on the outside. I like the idea of the 4 panel mirrored wardrobe doors but I also like the shaker style door aswell see pic. i agree with you I should have the glass inside the panels and have the frame around the door . I'm wondering will I have the same effect if I have the 3 centre doors in the Shaker style with the panel and glass inside?? similar to the 4 panel mirrored doors. thank you

I think the lighter fern fabric for the curtains would look very nice. And then linen, hessian, grey with pink warm undertone for the walls and ceiling, that the curtains almost blend in, and dark tone black shade for the window frame and the door. You can paint the nightstands black (if I can convince you to add a crystal knob. Alix’s pax handle looks really nice on black) and black low bookshelf in the corner where you have your shelves now, but window height and tour prints above it . Are you keeping that desk in your bedroom or is it for your daughter’s room? You are keeping it, put it under the window with your table mirror on it. Hessian fabric on the wardrobe door and paint the ridges black also. I would go with hessian fabric outside of the glass, it not entirely sure how difficult it is to do, tbh. if You put the fabric inside the glass you’d need to use a transparent glue. You are very good with diy, should be able to do it. If the fabric goes outside of the glass it will have a very different effect from the one if it goes under the glass.

Hello, What a light and spacious bedroom! I have to agree with Nicola and think you should consider putting the wardrobes somewhere else, such as the wall on the left hand side as you walk in which would work well. If you can move the door a bit more to the right that would be great so then the wardrobes can fit right up to the wall. It is likely though this will not be very straightforward to do so you could centralise the wardrobes to that wall as you will not be able to fit the wardrobes right up to the opposite wall anyway because of the window. Then you could put a dressing table at the side near the window. The alcoves either side of the chimney breast are quite narrow so you will not get much storage in these spaces anyway and I know like you say the depth is an issue. So I would look at putting chest of drawers in the alcoves as they would fit in well. Hannah

So you want to build almost identical cupboard as in pic 1 on both sides, but you don't have the depth because it would come out past the window?

Yes it would look awful and I would not do it. You could build identical from the front, but shallower but then it wouldn't take hanging rail.

Decide what's priority. Does it have to be identical looking from the front or wouldn't you just do open shelving on the other side?

Could you amend the cupboard already built to take 2 hanging rails, one top, another halfway and get rid of the shelf in the middle. that's what I'd do if I needed more hanging space,

Thanks for the comments, the plan is to have one for me and one for my wife. I don’t mind having the left hand side one slightly shallower to fit inside the door frame, but I was wondering if I could build it so it comes out as far as the frame but doesn’t protrude out as far as the actual door or would that look strange? I guess alternatively I could do side hanging rails on that side that can be pulled out... we have so much stuff that we ideally need two separate ones!

How about a filler panel next to the door frame? 15cms wide or so?

Definately make the wardrobe one and the same depth.
