Utility cupboard in bathroom - layout

After much debate, we are relocating our washing machine upstairs. I'd love thoughts on the best location for the cupboard that will house it and layout out of the rest of the bathroom. Tumbler will be there too.

Good Morning Rhian,

The tumble dryer can be placed on top of the washer to save space and make the room feel larger. Manufacturers provide fixing kits for this, some even come with a pull out shelf.

When we go through the design process here at Ellen Utley Interiors, we spend quite some time sketching out all of the possibilities and then narrow this down for you.

Beforehand, it is worth asking pertinent questions to really understand what the priorities are in the room. You may wish to have a separate shower or a shower over the bath. You might like the idea of plenty of storage in the form of shelves within the laundry cupboard, as shown with the below idea by Jonathan.

Whilst narrowing down the options, I recommend considering whenever possible that the toilet is not on view as you walk in the door, that the space is balanced, practical for accessing facilities and what makes the space feel larger and open. If you are having a bath, the view whilst sitting in the bath.

The next step is lighting and ensuring that the light is right for bedtime calm as well as morning wake up. Once again we go through the sketching process thinking of all of the possibilities and narrow it down.

Here is an inspiring image showing how floating units can optimise the feel of space and how a view without a toiler is best.

I can tell you that we have the washing machine upstairs and it works a treat, laundry goes straight in from the dressing room and there is far less travel plus the downstairs now contains extra storage space!

Hi Claire, I was intrigued with your question so I thought I'd provide you with some of my thoughts along with a quick sketch showing potential design layouts for your bathroom. It's quite tricky because the cupboard for the boiler isn't that large. I wouldn't encourage trying to fit a shower into that space because 1) 640mm wide would be too tight and it would be difficult to enjoy a shower without knocking your elbows against the walls. 2) You could widen this area by moving the stud wall down to provide you with maybe a 800mmx840mm shower but this wouldn't leave you much space for the bath, basin and WC. My opinion would be to utilise this additional space and move the bathroom door there to create a larger floor space. Option A (image on left) has the door located where the boiler is/was and the walls are kept as is currently. Option B shows the door facing towards the basin area which is a much more pleasant way to enter the room as oppose to Option A but requires adjusting the current walls slightly.I hope my thoughts help and if you require any further advice then please feel free to contact me directly. I am at work so no photos at the moment [will take some later] but we had it boxed in by builder next to the bathtub [we have a shower over bathtub]. It is 90cm x 85cm. We have a washer dryer and then 3 shelves from ikea algot range for stacking laundry baskets, loo roll and the like - our ceilings are high - 2.6m. We also keep ironing board and iron in there. Our electrician signed off everything and I think our bathroom is a bit bigger than yours - 2.2m x 2.6m. The utility cupboard is on the long wall see attached plan. It looks a bit like the photo below but instead of hanging space we have shelves We painted the doors same colour as walls and we have a roof light plus higher ceilings so it doesn't feel small at all. All our tatt is in the cupboard or sink vanity unit so the bathroom is much tidier than an average bathroom. We also have a glass shower screen so everything feels light and bright.

It seems having an external door in the bathroom is not a popular idea although I thought it was a good and practical idea?! I see the point with the clutter though...(sigh) ok, we will steer away from having an external door in this room! @OnePlan (Concept planners) sorry that's me - I didn't copy the whole floorplan! We will be keeping the bedroom on the left as this is the master bedroom with ensuite. This bedroom is also used to dry our cloths in the winter and it's constantly a mess with the amount of dry/wet clothes and clothes horse laying about! We will be moving the kids up to the loft and the small bedroom in front will turn into a multi function room office/playroom/guest room/place to dry the clothes. @sunshineband34 hadn't considered bringing the wall infront of the bathroom forward. It'd be good idea if we weren't planning the loft conversion but as the staircase is being installed in the hallway, it may be better to leave the front bathroom wall as is as otherwise it may feel closed in and dark? @minnie101 I had no idea such a thing existed! And that drying cupboard is amazing! Do you think it would fit in well outside the bathroom along the left wall/in the boiler cupboard space? Or do they have to be fitted near a window for ventilation?

Here in Australia we use the term 'European Laundry' for a compact laundry space hidden behind cupboard doors. Cupboards can be either 2 sets of bifolds that open towards the walls to reveal the full space, or a space behind sliders (2 or 3 sliders that can be moved along the entire track - just like wardrobes). On laundry days you would get the benefit of the walkway as space to move around in. You could draw out a layout where you can maximise your available storage, maybe stack a washer & dryer, and hide it all behind doors rather that the expense of putting in a wall to to create a very small space. Search compact laundry here on houzz for some brlliant examples. Your area looks like this arrangement would work well.

I like Jonathan’s layout, I would 2/3 tall towel radiators to the blank wall. We did this to a laundry room /utility and it has become a life saver. All laundry gets hung up on the towel radiators and it’s dry by the morning without going outside or in the tumble dryer. Pop in dual control ones so you can turn them on or off in the summer months. Pop a hanging rail above the machines and as the room is warm the T-shirt’s and shirts dry super quick too!

Full or half walls, creating a nook, a change of entrance door handing or a separation of the toilet room can allow for this.
