Kitchen update - advice needed
all, i am in need of your precious advice and ideas to brighten up and make my kitchen more cool, more vibrant and up to date. We moved in this house a few years ago and slowly doing a refurbishment and do not seem to come to the kitchen part as either i lack ideas or moneywise i do not want to spend much given i am on mat leave with my 3rd baby 💃
what i aim to do is to- 1) replace extractor, 2) replace worktop 3) paint cabinets 4) change knobs on cabinets. really just to scratch the surface, but hope to achieve a better look & feel when being and cooking in the kitchen:) we also recently opened up the space by removing a wall between the kicthen and living room so that the flow is much more natural and now i can see my kitchen and all the old cabinets etc from the living room, hence the need to update is much more apparent.. i need advice in color scheme for the cabinet paint - all white or maybe a duo (one color top and another color bottom line of cabinets) and how about the worktop? wood? anyone has before and after kitchen refurb with similar color of tiles?? i will do refurb myself and i really appreciate everyones advice !! many many thanks!! p.s. the first photos without number are from my current kitchen and the ones with numbers - these are from my ideabook 🙂

Comments (2)I would not render or put any cladding up just spruce up what is there. I would paint the stone coins and window ledges so that they look pristine then unify the window frames by painting all the same colour. I would paint the lower ones white as I think white looks smarter against red brick. I would paint the wood door- again a lighter colour looks smart against red brick although this can soon look dirty in an urban area- perhaps a taupe/ grey would be forgiving. The dark brown carpet would also go in. I'd then be wanting to use white emulsion on the doors and walls. To add some interest, how about creating a feature using either a coloured chandelier or mirror? This wouldn't be a very cost effective solution. Comments (6)I also like the wallpaper. If it were my kitchen I would clean up the look at it is currently more tatty than retro. I would paint the ceiling a very pale grey and the walls a dark grey. A new lino will help clean up the look. Personally I wouldn’t try to change the tiles because I don’t think painting tiles is generally an improvement. But I would paint the cabinets. 6 years agoMixed unit colours can look good with a modern kitchen, but I would leave yours one colour. Something simple and neutral like white, pale grey or taupe is easy to live with. I have a wooden worktop and I will be changing it. It needs oiling every few months, and even with that it is not hardwearing. Mine is covered in dents, has faded in places and gone black in places near the sink. Water and wood just don't mix. Your worktop looks pretty good, so fix the end piece on the left where the chipboard is showing. You can get iron on end pieces.
So I would paint the units. Lots of people have done this so search “Repainted kitchens” on Advice. Change the knobs, loads for sale online, and change the tap for something more classic like a swan neck one. There are companies who sell replacements doors and drawers, as E D suggests, so that may be an option too.
Below are a couple of pics of my deteriorating wooden worktop. it is 10 years old and not fared well. Second pic is a tap that may suit your sink. Is the sink ceramic?

6 years agoWe have done similar to you in a very small kitchen (twice) - before and after (and after) photos attached! Make sure you do your prep of the doors properly and choose the right paints :) I am sure if you do a pro job the paint can be very hard wearing. We found we have got a few dings here and there when being clumsy with cutlery or pots and pans, so a spare pot of paint to touch up occasionally has been required.
