How do I configure my kitchen to suit my family?

Hi, I have a kitchen that is a slightly awkward shape. I want to create an opening on to our garden, but there doesn’t seem to be an obvious solution. I need some help with ideas as to where I can put some bifold doors and rearrange where my kitchen sits.

They are lovely handles Patrina. I'm having a bit of a handle issue since the holes in the pull handles on the four drawers are 83mm centre to centre and there are not many options with that sizing in brushed brass. I've found a couple of possibilities from china but with the problems there I'm not sure how long they will take to arrive.

I agree that the medium oak units with black worksurface look is pretty dated, and I personally think it can make the room seem quite dark. But as others have said, the kitchen in general looks to be in good condition. I would paint the units a lighter white-tone colour and change the handles to a mix of knobs and cup handles. Paint the walls in perhaps a contrast colour or white to keep it all fresh and neutral. Add some interesting accessories, pendant lamps etc. Cheap way to get a brand new look.

Wow! Thanks to all of you for your comments. I think the room in Susanna's picture is beautiful but I think I want a slightly less romantic feel if you can see what I mean? I think I'm trying to get a modern, clean lines look that will major on natural palette BUT that is softened by some texture and I think a pop of colour rather than lots of colour. The Dining Chairs are black leather with brushed steel legs - no wood. I like the greeny blue colour backsplash in mrsmcee74's picture but might want something a little more punchy if I went with that palette. Love the John Lewis Dandelions - had them in the bedroom for a couple of years but that room is next in my list! This is really making me think about what I want for the kitchen / family room. Very helpful indeed!!

Hi Yolanda - I'd change the stools, table and chairs, and swap the pendants for something in coloured glass or (personally) metallic, and change the cabinet handles from steel to brass/gold. Instant lift. Splashback-wise, try distressed mirror (suitably tempered and toughened) as it has loads of personality, bounces light around and is easy to clean. Then play with wall colour. Warm accents will stop the wood door from jarring so much (or paint it, if you can convince your husband). You have a lovely kitchen - will take very little to get it where you want!

The walls that are 8m.....are they actual walls, or openings to other rooms, attached to next Dr neighbours? Where are the best views of garden from?

Are you going to reuse the kitchen or get new one?

If I'm reading the pics/plan correct, if you had the kitchen units on left wall of your plan you could have doors there instead if window?

Hi Ellie, thanks for your reply and apologies that my plan isn’t too detailed. I’m a first hand at this, so a lot to learn!

The walls that are 8m to the left are solid supporting walls. From the pictures they lead in to the (messy) playroom with a separator pillar in between. Best views of the garden are straight ahead as you walk through the door, where the window above the kitchen sink is.

It’s looking likely I’ll have to replace the kitchen so open to all ideas. Thanks again.

We would like to help with this.

It appears that zoning to ensure that toys remain in one space would be beneficial. For example, once we are aware of drainage locations we can advise on options for moving the rooms around. Your children may enjoy being closer to you and the re-zoning could fix this. Many clients enjoy their dining table nearby these large glazed doors for a light, bright inviting table and an alfresco feeling in summer.

The first step is to gather the requirements and information in a brief and sketched plan with sun, wind and views noted. Then sketching out all of the options and narrowing these down using pros and cons with guide you in the right direction. An interior designer will do all of this for you (with remote and full services available). When using this service you will be benefitting from expert advice and backed decisions and possibly even supplier discounts.

For further advice you will be asked:

- orientation North

- *what is directly outside the walls

- where do the doors lead

- who lives with you

- what is it about the current kitchen that you dislike

- *what are you attracted to

- *any adjacent rooms to tie in or flow through

- 8where does the plumbing waste drain to

-* what is the property like

- would you like to achieve anything e.g. keep the play area contained

* images can be sufficient

Good evening Edward,

I agree with @Ellen Utley Interiors above - just off the cuff going by the points you made it would seem like the new doors should be where the current kitchen sink and window are. I would recommend keeping the playroom within view of the kitchen and then having the dinning area where the current playroom is where it will be shaped in daylight from the other set of doors and from where your dinner guests won't see the dirty dishes!

I'm keen to see how you get on so do post an update.
