Cannot agree on external doors!

Any suggestions would be appreciated! We are (still) in the planning phase of a knock through which will involve 2 sets of bifold/sliding/french doors. Trouble is, we cannot agree on which! My husband wants minimalist sliding doors. Whilst these are obviously fabulous, the house is Edwardian and I’m nervous it’ll be too modern or even look too obvious (heavy aluminium bifolds are everywhere around here). We will also be needing big internal doors to separate the family room. I like Crittal style for this element and my have persuaded him on this. I have put the planned layout below.

Oh, Rachelle, I'm so sorry, after all your research and planning and bravery!! Well, there's is nothing wrong with cream, but I completely understand how you wanted to climb out of that box of one colored crayons, lol. It is what it is, I do hope that you'll be able to build your pergola and I also hope you can introduce a bit of color with your door, this color is from sherwin Williams, it's SW 6480 lagoon, it would be beautiful with a cream house color and a terracotta roof. Good luck, and I'd love to see your final result, please post a picture at the end of project. And I'm glad you're upbeat and looking at the "sunny side" :)

Hi, I have recently built a set of steps internally going from a kitchen down into a sun room area a drop of around 600 mm the ballustrading was how you have described you would like yours. This was built at the clients request and she has since had the building inspector round and he was not happy with the design because like you said it can be used as a ladder! My client also does not have any children 5 or under living or visiting her property. The conclusion from the building inspector was that she would have to cover the ballustrading to stop it being used as a ladder and so has been agreed that she will put Perspex or similar to keep the light flowing through so that she can get the work signed off. What the inspector is saying is that although she will not have children under 5 at her property if she ever sell,up and moves on then potentially a buyer with a child under 5 could move in so I guess they are trying to future proof everything. In the existing part of her house she has this design already which is why she wanted the horizontal ballustrading to match. Hope this helps.

I think theres a lot of potential there and give the house is of a modern (mid century?) style i would play on the contemporary setting with a simple palette of few materials well used. For example loose the crazy paving for sure and you could have lawn or have a scattering or multi stem trees such as birch as has been suggested set in slate mulch or low mass planting. I think the drive needs to be pulled away from the house as it looks like the car is parked up against the front door, you have room to make the turning area wider and so you can park away from the house, rather than obscure it. If budget always you could replace the tired concrete block drive with a resin bound surface in silver stone or new grey blocks. The key is to be bold and keep it simple with a limited number of materials which are well executed to compliment the house! Good luck

This is a common dilemma on house. I think the easiest thing is to paint the wooden beams and window frames in either a pale grey or pale taupe and the render in a soft white. There are some trendy tudor buildings near where I live where the owners have done this. Here’s some ideas.

Is the idea to use the space inbetween the 2 sets of doors as an outdoor seating/dining area to create circular movement? There are plenty of choices on the market for fine framed doors - Crittal or similar.

Hi Nicky. The doors lead to the garden so the idea of the doors is mainly to get the best view of the garden. I don’t mind sliders in the dining room area but don’t really want them down the kitchen end as that will be a seating area with log burner and tv so thought maybe having two long windows and possibly French doors in the middle would work better with a room with furniture? Trying to marry Edwardian and contemporary is tricky! Thanks x

Having not seen the exterior - this sounds like a good idea. I find that opening a full wall of glass is fabulous to look at but not always as prctical as it sounds - it means to glass wall cannot be used for anything else (furniture etc.) Unless you want the full indoor/outdoor feel to the rooms, I would stick with large French doors which open fully back on themselves so they don't use up any of the outdoor space. Here are a few examples.
