Decorating the bedroom

We are about to renovate the bedroom in our 1870s cottage. The new wardrobes will be fitted this week and we are thinking about decorating. It's not a huge room, but big enough for our kingsize bed, bedside tables, robes and dressing tables. There are several sloping ceilings and I wonder if it would be a good idea to paint the walls and the ceiling the same colour to give the illusion of more height.

Hi! I think it would be a good idea to paint the walls and ceiling in the same colour, especially in a light colour. It will make the room look higher and lighter. In a cottage the rooms are usually quite small, that's why I wouldn't go for any bright or dark colours, as it would make your space feel compact. Light colour in walls and ceiling will work well!

Do you have a picture of the room and slopes? I agree with Atelier you could go over walls and ceiling with one colour to stop it looking bitty.

I wouldn't be going for spotlights or changing the flooring, combined those changes may leave you with a very 'cold' feeling rather than a cocooning bedroom. Yes, change the light fitting definitely. Changing you drapery to say, roman blinds will help with a m odern feel. Would it be possible to change the doors and drawer fronts on the units to flat ones. I think it's the shapes in the panels which are the dating these away from modern.

Here’s some ideas of bright modern bedrooms. They’ve used off white or pale taupe on the walls and just added colour with the furniture and bedding. Is this the sort of thing you like? The last picture uses a bit more colour but only in the bedding. Love the dark furniture and ceiling fan, giving it a tropical vibe. A soft grey more girly look, Gorgeous taupe panelling which the bedding echoes. Chucking some contrasting colour out there!

Thank you MIs G and minnie101 for your suggestions and minnie101 thank you for the photoshop, really helps to visualise it better. It makes sense, the plugs call my attention because there is nothing in that wall. I'll see if I can find a narrow piece of furniture as suggested and perhaps hang a mirror. I like the panelling too, but can't visualise it if it's only in that wall and I would still want access to the plugs, justs in case.
