Kitchens Design Dilemma

What color tile should I choose with a black kitchen?

We're getting a new kitchen and I really like it to be one with black kabinets and a walnut countertop. I just can't figure out if I should go with a white subway or something more interesting. Any ideas?

I presume you mean wall tile as opposed to floor tile? If so what’s on the floor?

I would go for high gloss mustard green wet wall where the tiles were. This colour looks great with aubergine and the sleek finish will instantly update the kitchen. Positional ceiling halogens and lighting under the wall cupboards to make the rich colours glow. I think three colours are fine, especially if you pull them together in a blind fabric or cushion. ???

Hi mandskita Usually a designer would look to the context of the barn to see what kind of style is appropriate to the setting based on historic facts or local environment. For example, what roof coverings are used in the local area on the barns in local properties. If these are slate and or reddish/brown clay then that becomes and appropriate place to start (apologies if that is what you have done, I just had to cover myself!) So if these two are the choices the clay tiles will create a lovely contrast to the black, although the slate would create a more sleek design and the blacks and greys would play off of each other nicely too. The profiles or clay tiles are more rounded and the profile of slates is more flat, so that will also change the profile and look of the roof, so that is something to consider. And some inspiration pics just to help you visualise the end result ;-) This looks softer and more rounded and lighter. This has stronger lines and is more powerful. I’m no colour expert, but I feel a stair carpet like your first pic is very neutral and won’t clash. Ive seen rooms that mix cream, grey and beige and they just look lovely. The dark staircase will add another dimension but still quite neutral. Your staircase is so beautiful it really doesn’t need too much of a change, Skimming Stone is a lovely grey/beige. I would get match pots of the colours you like, paint them on A4, or larger, card and try them in various places and see what you think, paint colours can really change depending on aspect and light. If you can get some carpet samples too you can create a mood board so you can really get an idea of the look. The pics below show how lovely grey, beige and black/grey/brown can look together. What flooring should I choose for kitchen/diner in this situation?

Most people have different flooring in the kitchen/diner when compared to other parts of the house (even in posh house magazines), I‘d use something completely different ie a tiled floor maybe in a natural stone so it compliments the wood or you coukd use a Karnden but laid in a herringbone pattern. Personally i think its better to be completely different rather than trying to tie it in and not getting it completely right. In my old house we had oak floor throughout then a granite in the kitchen/diner i never even noticed it. Good luck

Something more interesting! There are such a huge array of tiles available that you can have something lovely. As the units and worktop are dark I would go with a light palette. Hexagonal tiles are lovely. If you wanted subway tiles you could lay then in a more interesting way such as herringbone (better with slim subways) or upright, like below
