How to design a garden half in sun and half in shade?

I have a wide, shallow west facing walled garden. One side is north facing and is in pretty deep shade, and the other gets absolutely baked by the sun. The garden is too small to divide up into separate 'rooms'; how would you advise going about designing the garden so that it feels coherent when the planting conditions are so different on the different sides?

Don’t worry most garden’s have a mixture of shady and sunny areas and it’s great that you can choose so many different plants. The shady area can be planted with Japanese Maples (Acers), Cornus kousa, Hydrangeas, ferns, Bergenia, Hardy Geraniums and Japanese Anemones. The sunny side you can grow a dwarf ornamental cherry tree, Hibiscus, Ceanothus, dwarf lilac, Star Jasmine, Cistus, Crocosmia, Lavender. This is just a small selection, there are loads. If you see a plant in a garden centre, check the label so you plant on the right side!

In autumn you can also add bulbs - Snowdrops on shady side and daffodils and tulips on the sunny side, but there are many.

I agree with Sonia, lots of plants to choose from. How 'small' is the garden? If you post dimensions and photos, we might be able to give you more to the point ideas. You can attach photos to a comment.

Thanks. I've gone off the idea of the long winding path. I think it would take too much space. This is my latest thoughts. Two round lawns that intersect, edged by little pavers, and with a path through the middle (which I'd probably add later). Any thoughts? How can I improve this? Thanks for any opinion. It really helps.

I also think it would be a shame to lose the evergreen in the right corner. They do take a long time to get to that size and it’s giving you a little privacy from the neighbors. If there is room I would put the shed behind the conifer? Leaving you the left corner where the stone block wall is as a seating area. This should be facing south I think and you could make it pretty by painting the wall and adding some trellis and climbers and a pergola. The apple tree has had its day i think, maybe you could cut it but leave the main trunk and use it as a bird table. Be sure to condition and level the soil before laying new turf, it looks pretty compacted at the moment. Good luck with your garden I’m sure it will look great in the end.

Hello Nick, What you want does depend of children and their ages. Sunlight etc And budget as excavating and making safe will cost. And style. Some ideas: 1. Create 2 levels one at the same or just higher than you walk out level. This will be you BBQ area seating area. The rest grass and raised beds. 2. Create a sunken garden area taking out the middle where you would sit, eat... 3. Add large and small, potted plants on steps. The back of the garden add a trellis and grow rambling roses or clematis, This will soften the back. In between add lights. 4. Depending on you age and how much you like gardening. Very large pots can act as your planting area. Or create theraised bed all at the back. 5. Lighting on the wall all the way around. Above it an outdoor mirror to reflect light into the garden. Can be framed or not. Or a steel, aluminium... screen, with some sort of cut out design. The light behind and or in front of them. 6. Create a living wall. The living wall can be a mixture of edibles as well as flowers. Paint the white wall a different colour. 7. Make use of the steps. Take off the top and plant inside them, or add plant pots in them. Add decking to the grass, a circle or oval of decking. From the decking create a path going down, by covering the steps in the same decking. For a modern take on decking alternate concrete with decking. eg. a border of concrete which will match your white walls then decking in the middle. 8. Take out the steps at the side and make a large deep square or circular planting area out of concrete. Then you could plant a tree. (check appropriate sizes and growth time) 9. Your back wall can just be a fusion of different coloured lights, random or structured and or can change, or can be daylight bulbs. 10. Move your seating area to the brightest side / edge. This area an have built in seating, an out door banquette with storage underneath. The flooring in tiles or decking to zone off the area. 11. If you have a particularly dark area, why not put a structure there. A modern pegola and or light structure, sculpture with lights to brighten. I hope these ideas help or a combination of them. They can be a modern or classic twist depending on what your style is. Have fun :)

Hi Denise, Lovely big sunny garden. I would spend the next six months working out how you use the garden, where you gravitate to with different weather conditions, sunny, windy, wet and at different times of the day. Maybe creating shade might be a priority….the bottom left corner looks like it is a suntrap and growing grass there a problem….once you get a feel for the different areas you can then think about flow and access from the patio. Investigate whether there is a retaining wall of sorts holding back the patio. One design that comes to mind is extending the patio in front of the kitchen to the brick wall and possibly along the wall into the garden to create an L shape with the existing patio and create a dining area with pergola over, then you could have a sunken lower garden with two wide steps for access. I would look to put some kind of partition fence or trellis along the side of the patio by the side gate for safety reasons. Enjoy your planning, decide on a planting style, if its as sunny and protected as it looks then you could go tropical….
