Going slowly insane trying to choose bathroom tiles - help!!

We are re-doing our currently VERY bland family bathroom in our 1912 North London house (some original features).
I am very opinionated in knowing what I like and don’t like in magazines and on websites but have no idea where to start with my own.

I live the idea of a statement bathroom but slightly worried that it will date. I originally thought I wanted colour but now I’m frightened to commit to anything.

We have chosen the furniture as shown and the rest is a blank canvas except that that the window on the angled wall has stained glass in it and the bath is white.

Help!!! Statement floor and plain elsewhere? Mostly plain and contrast in shower?? I am driving myself (and my family) mad!!

If you want something to not date (so much does!) then I would go classic. So simple tiles in white where they are needed, that is shower and behind basin, not all over. You could tile halfway in white, then paint above it any colour you wish. Paint is so easy to update and change, but tiling isn’t. Dark colours are very fashionable at the moment, so you could paint charcoal grey, navy, chocolate etc above the tiles, then when trends change, and they will, you will only need to re-paint the walls. Although classic greens and taupe never date.

I love patterned floor tiles, but of course colours and patterns are a very personal thing. Do you have a favourite colour? Here are some ideas which you may like?

I have just gone through this process. My plumber and the specialist tiler each made the same points: (1). Around the "heavy water flow" areas, mosaics are higher risk. The weakest point for water getting in is the grouting. If you use small tiles, you maximise the chances of water damage simply because there is more grouting. (2). Very large wall tiles make their lives more difficult. I used huge wall tiles (90cm X 30cm) and they both said that those very large tiles are more difficult to ensure a completely flat surface. The plastered walls are never completely flat and even and it is easier to adjust adhesive levels with more regular sized tiles. Not a reason to avoid massive tiles (although they seem to be more expensive) but just be aware. On the upside, there are fewer grout lines, so less likely to get water damage! (3). If you get a heavily textured tile surface, it is much more difficult to get a really clean tile cut when they need to trim them. Can result in higher wastage as a result. So, overall, I'd avoid mosaics other than as a trim in bath or shower areas. To keep costs down and make the job faster, go for a smooth wall tile no bigger than 60x40cm. Or ignore all this and go for what you love!

Hi the bathroom is taking shape, we have a working shower cubicle and the walls/floor are nearly tiled. However, when knocking down walls to create 2 bedrooms the builder masking taped the doors and upon removal has peeled off the gloss in sections. He is taking no responsibility because he said the decorator used one coat Dulux without scoring the doors. Do you agree he is not responsible? We had not planned to paint these doors. Thanks.

Hi Daisyone. It looks like there's some colour in those floor tiles (I see a lovely russetty orange but photos are not colour-accurate so I won't make any recommendations)...you could pick up on that...why not take one of the tiles to a specialist paint showroom and get some expert help / play around with colours? Make sure you look at the colour (most showrooms will have a large paint sample of each colour) against the tile and something white as well. Then you can have fun choosing toning towels and accessories!

Hi Ffion, I have to agree with Thelma Henry Interiors. Use a large format wall tile, even 450 x 900 to have as few grout lines as possible. Porcelanosa do several pale grey tiles, Rodano Acero 80 x 80 cm, Nápoles 44 x 66 cm, and others. Paint an "old" white above to match the white of your floor tile. Make sure there's enough contrast between the paint colour and the white of the sanitary ware to avoid having the walls look dirty. Hope that's useful.

Thanks. I definitely do quite like green. I’m quite open about colours - I just really don’t like black and white bathrooms. Thanks for these ideas. I definitely won’t do more than half way tiling but was hoping to do something a bit more than white so that the bath ‘stands’ out a bit more?
