Front door width help please!

Hi!

Hoping that someone can help. This feels like a bit of an exam question but I'm trying to work out the door size that I need to be able to fit a wide door and side-panel into the aperture that my builder has left.

The aperture is 1200mm wide and I need at least 850mm clear space through the doorway in order to get my wheelchair through with enough room. I'm getting confused by the fact that door width doesn't always equal the clear space that you would have to go through the door and that the frame sizes vary so much.

I ordered a door and thought that this whole nightmare decision process was over, but had to cancel it because when the surveyor came they said they didn't actually make doors wide enough for my requirements.

My question is, what is the door width that I would need to leave a 850mm-900mm clearance through the doorway..?

Hi Elki, are you getting a door from a door and window company? If so, they are made to measure, so you should be able to get a door wide enough for your wheelchair and the side window too, and they should then make it to fit. I think trying to source a non standard door yourself would be very difficult. Unless I am misunderstanding your post, of course!

Hi Sonia!

I’m hoping to be able to get one through a door and window company as you say. The door I ordered was from a door company who sent out a surveyor to measure up the space and get the sizing right. But he said that they don’t make doors wide enough for what I want (even though I checked this with their customer services multi times!). He also said that even with their widest door we wouldn’t be able to also fit a side-panel.

Sorry for the brain-dump! It’s all very frustrating since the whole point of the renovation is to make our bungalow accessible.

Hello littleacre2014, Jonathan has a point and also a word of caution... I am also painting my front door and have found that the colour I like in the shop is not the colour that dries on the door... Light levels seems to send it several shades lighter than the intended... Get a sample pot and do a test first! That way you can be sure the finish is as good as the initial like.. : ))

Hello Miriam, What a lovely cottage. I would use the front room a reception, mudroom / library, occasional writing. It looks like a lovely bright room. It can be used as a dining space for occasions to accommodate a big table if needed. You could put a folding table between the chimney which can act as a console when not in use. An internal window could be added to the space to the right of the stairs opposite the entrance door to bring some more light into the back of the house. In the back room if you put TV above the chimney. You could have a breakfast bar table with couple of bar stools. That would free another wall for a couch.

Thanks so much for responding, I love greeny/grey colours but our next door neighbour has their front door that colour so didn’t want to appear to be copying. Grey might be nice but do you think it will go with the existing creamy colour of the render or will it look a bit odd? We are due to repaint it anyway, so could change the colour of the render? Does it have to have a side panel? A local window company made our door bespoke and the door is 1200mm wide.

look at 'Smart' front doors, we have one and you can get in various sizes and they make the side panels to match the space. brilliant doors.
