Exteriors Renovating

Help!! what colour of cladding and door.

Hello houzzers, we are having a little renovation done on our house. We are at the point where we have to choose cladding to go to the top half of the house and on top of a little porch we’ve added. The glass door on the right is going away and would be replaced by a window. I will appreciate any colour suggestions of cladding and door to add a little kerb appeal. Thank you.

To use your terminology, I think the photos may be ‘a little’ 🙂 confusing.

I'd go with a white frame to match internal, then I'd choose a composite door which is coloured inside and outside. These aren't as easy to come by as you may think. My supplier has pistachio green, black, orange! All sorts. I picked a bright red front and black back door. Company whom I bought through and fitted was Windows Solutions Wales in Cardiff.. Fabulous.

Well AJ, I am really tempted, I know with coloured doors it is all about the finish, but we do have professional decorators, so it might be now or never, should it be properly black or a very dark grey? thing is, my husband usually lets me get on with it, I think I should listen when he is really doubtful. On the other hand, we have to do the whole house because of the rewiring, so it is an opportunity for coherence and unity instead of our usual mishmash. Dunno

If you look at the 'black band', there are two air bricks in that area, typically they would be just above the oversite (the floor foundation) and a minimum of 6"(150mm) above the outside ground level. So the front garden most likely was higher and has subsequently been graded down to the drive, the garage floor is much lower than the house which is more or less at the same level as the house next door in the photo. As long as a planter feature stays at least two courses lower than the airbricks it would be fine, and would definitely improve the appearance of the windows being too high above the ground. My specs regarding air brick placement might be a little dated as I haven't built in the UK since the '90s and regs may have changed but the age of the house looks about right. The black band is probably what is left of a bituminous painted plinth that used to be common on many houses.

I have anthracite grey cladding. Looks modern and effective with white windows.
