Replace Conservatory Roof

Has anyone replaced their plastic conservatory roof with a proper roof? If so would you recommend? Does it deal with the issues of being too hot/too cold? Or should I just rip it out and extend?

Lots of our clients have chosen to rip out and extend - due to conservatories - even with new roofs - often still not being thermally efficient enough to be opened up into the rest of the home . Keeping outdoor grade doors to the area does limit the design possibilities somewhat.

Thanks for the advice. Great idea with the painting but I just think with the polycarb roof, the old fashioned window design I'd want to get rid of and options re: the floor and potentially underfloor heating I'd not really get what we would want and it really needs to be rebuilt at some point. I quite like the idea of dwarf walls as well and this obviously provides more options with plug sockets etc.

Hi Firstly the new low-e glazing would make a considerable difference to the thermal properties of your conservatory. When used in conjunction with modern upvc profiles the efficiency is increased due to the pockets within the plastic structure of the profile. Comments above discuss opening the wall between the house snd the conservatory. You cannot do this and leave it as an opening without doors. The conservatory is not considered as part of the dwelling and therefore needs a final exit door between the two rooms. Personally I think it spoils a lovely property, however if it is valuable space and you are still unsure talk to a few independent window companies and not the big national one that is stylish and safe! Look up low e glass, there will be detailed info on how this works from the manufacturers of the glass such as Pilkingtons or St Gobain.

Well, we’re using a firm who do architectural design and project management for our shower room extension, and I have used the same firm at work. I came across them through a colleague who had worked in the same field. But if you search for architectural design you should find firms local to you. The next challenge is checking how good they are of course! The firm we use are great at listening to our ideas, then translating them into plans etc, and advising on the options open to us. I’d start with a phone call to gauge how they approach things and see what sort of rapport there is. And check reviews of course, or seek references from other customers. Good luck. Angie

Although isn’t it the plan to replace the conservatory roof? If you replace the inexpensive roof with a proper insulated flat or pitched roof then you don’t have to have a well insulated door (or indeed any door). Given the conservatory isn’t very deep I think it’s already difficult to put furniture in so if you buy a folding door and then plan enough space for it to fold back then you won’t have much useable space left. You are in danger of creating an oversized back porch and if you are going to upgrade the roof to the same standard as the main house then you should seriously consider opening up the kitchen to this space so you are better connected to the garden.
