Comments (0)We now have planning permission for our rear double storey extension and raised roof loft conversion - yippeee! Have the first builder (a guy via the architect) coming around on Saturday to have a look at our house and come up with a quote. Never had any work done on the house before so completely new to this whole process so looking for some guidance! We get that it’s important to get a few quotes/see the builders previous work/get references etc before making a decision. But is there anything specific I should be asking the builder, has anyone got any advice for anything they had wished they’d asked/done before deciding on a builder? Also if anyone has had any work done in the Leeds area and can recommend a building firm would be good to know - I searched on Houzz but couldn’t find anyone nearby who had any reviews! Comments (3)Howdens are not transparent as they only deal with trade but upon saying that if l were the builder l would want to see the drawings before quoting. You are therefore going around in circles because of how Howdens trade. Depending on how much your chosen builder deals with Howdens relates to the discount he will receive and then it is up to him to decide if he will pass all or any on to you. Many people do not like Howdens for this reason. There are a couple of alternatives: try a different Howdens branch (they do vary in the way they work) or go elsewhere. Go to an independent who will offer kitchen costs and labour. They are no more expensive and offer better quality.
