Help with chimney breast space

Hi all,

We moved in to our new home March this year and we are slowly getting there. We have 2 chimney breasts downstairs, one in the living room where we have fitted a log burner and another in the dining room which has an alcove, we are struggling to come up with ideas on what to put in it or what to do with it, I have attached a few photos below (excuse the flooring we are in process of having it relayed) the dining table sits
opposite the alcove. Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Tom, congratulations to your new home! You can put some glass or wooden shelves in the alcove (for the plates, glasses etc.) with hidden LED strip lights or turn it into a display cabinet if you are a collector. Another idea is to put a minibar in it; or if you like drinking coffee after lunch and dinner you can create a small coffee bar there. Above the alcove hang an artwork on the wall or use other paint colour to make it a feature wall.

Going back to original options with the sofas opposite each other, can you fit a tv unit under the stairs as that could look quite good? With regard to the L shaped arrangement with the tv on the unit, you could drill a circle in the back of the unit and store the play station and sky in there. Another option which I think could work is to swap the dining and living round as the dining end looks bigger. Have one sofa on the kitchen wall with the other opposite ( place the sofas about a foot from both walls) and hang the tv above the radiator. You could make a feature of the room with a built in tv, Sky and radiator cover, as per example attached from Andre hodges. That should still give you at least 4ft for a clear corridor to the kitchen ( on the basis the 7ft measurement you gave was from the side of the kitchen door!) I wouldn't paper the recesses now I've seen the whole room. Maybe considering papering or painting the kitchen wall to Bring the wall in so as to make it feel wider and give more interest to the lounge.

Hi. what about using a grasscloth something in a grey/ brown? You could also paint the fire surround, depending on what else is going in the room a charcoal or a greige would look nice or maybe just a chalky white.

Thank you all. Apologies I'm not sure how to answer individually. I agree that the skirting board jutting out looks very strange, most rooms in the house have some 'interesting' design choices. Would you believe that the man who made these changes has now set up his own building company! The lamp on the left is from IKEA, I only bought it a few months ago so it should still be available. Unfortunately the lamp on the right is a flea market find so no idea where it came from. The second alcove is substantially smaller than the one with the bookcase currently in it. I'm just concerned that it may look 'unbalanced' with the built in shelves. I haven't managed to find pictures of rooms with alcoves differing in width. I do love the idea of built in shelves, it seems safer than our current bookcase and adding the storage underneath the last shelf would be helpful. I have found an original black cast iron Victorian fireplace with a width of 125cm versus the 140cm of the chimney. Would this work with the green wall? The room is painted in Breakfast Room Green and I've attached a photograph of the fireplace. Thank you for the suggestion about the mirror. This is the first time that the living room has been tidy enough to have the mirror against the chimney breast so it's helpful to have opinions on it's size. Thank you all again!

To be honest if it was me and I was going to paint the brick then I would go and paint it so that it is obviously painted rather than trying to recreate the red brick look with paint. I think it will just look fake whereas if you were to paint it white it would compliment your walls nicely and you would still get to keep the texture of the brick without trying to make it look like something it's not if that makes sense. There are great tutorials online from bloggers who have done it if you are interested in seeing how the finished result would look. You could full on paint it white or whitewash it for a more watered down paler look. Good luck with your project :)

We had all our awkward oversized children's books in ours at previous house. So you could fit a lovely wooden shelf and have 2 lots of books in that space.

A bioethanol stove?
Some look just like a traditional woodburner, others more contemporary. The advantages for your dining room is that they’re freestanding - no venting required - make no mess, and are very controllable. They won’t put out as much heat as your real log burner, though.
