double glazing noise reduction

Just moved into house on very busy main road. All windows are double glazed. Master bedroom only also has secondary glazing panels fitted to inside..... But I'm not keen at all.

The downstairs main panel of double glazing is blown, trying to decide whether to just replace that panel or fork out the extra money to replace whole window with triple glazing at this window faces the road.

Also does triple glazing give more or less noise reduction compared to double glazing + secondary glazing? In other words should I replace the horrible secondary glazing panels for triple glaze windows instead?

Hoping someone can give me first hand experience of glazing options living on a noisy main road.

Hi Ruth,

The glass thickness and type of glass you have will actually make a bigger difference to the level of noise than the choice between double or triple glazing.

I am not sure what type of glass you currently have in your windows but you may want to look into having double glazed windows that use acoustic glass, as this is designed to drastically reduce the level of noise coming in through your windows.

Hello Ffion. As it was already mentioned above it is not recommendable to sleep with a window behind your head. Can you upload some more pictures of your bedroom? Just to have an idea how it is organised. I believe there is always solution ;). You can believe or not but your sleeping problems may be caused more by the placement of your bed then street lights. Do read very carefully the ideas your planning area has on being "green". We have achieved a quality non-reflective double glazing accepted by our central village conservation area. Ours are wood framed Georgian and were made specially as were others along the street. The glass is Swedish or something but doesn't look like double glazing and looks a huge lot better than secondary.

Be careful - replacing original windows may devalue your house. If you are in a conservation area or your house is listed, changing windows would require permission that would may not be granted. If however your house is in an area where everyone has changed to modern alternatives then you will likely be assured there would be no problem. If the building is historically interesting I say renovate your existing windows, replace rotten wood, repair sash cords and have the work done off site where they can remove the glass, strip all the paint, make the repairs, prime all the wood and then replace glass. Expect a window to be repaired every other day and then a few days for final coat painting at the end.

Your windows look great, particularly with the fantastic looking cornice your house appears to have. I agree with MB keep them if at all possible. They may well be hardwood so chances are they have little or no rot. There are specialised companies that can restore them and make them draught free. If you have to replace them, consider timber first. Having said that, there are fairly good looking period style UPVC windows these days. Take your time to do lots of research to make an informed decision I say. 😊 We used a company called The Sash Window Workshop who replaced a Victorian bay window, similar to yours, with ‘like for like’ hardwood windows, but double glazed. Not cheap but they did a fine professional job with no pushy sales people. In five years we’ve not had to do any maintenance to the windows and they still look as good as when they were installed.
