Triple Glazing or Acoustic Glazing

Help please fellow Houzzers ..... Our ancient aluminium windows do not fit at all and are going to be replaced. I wake up at everything, people's conversations (usually on their way back from the pubs), traffic, amorous foxes howling ...... do we go for triple glazing or acoustic glazing? Heat loss is not my primary concern, i just want to sleep through the night and we have four windows fronting the main road. Advice appreciated.

Triple glazing and acoustic glazing can actually be one in the same thing. Acoustic glazing is a make up of certain panes of glass to stop what ever decibel your trying to stop. You first have to work out the amount of noise you need to stop and then we can come up with an accounting value make up to stop the noise. I have standard make ups for certain areas if you want to contact me I can come up with a viable solution for you !!

We hope you got your Glazing issue resolved? A good double glazed window system with acoustic glass should do the job well if high energy performance isn't your key requirement.

chanti1, my grandparents used to have massive condensation problems with their double glazing as it was added as an afterthought, it had about a 4 inch gap and was not sealed so they would have to keep cloths in the gap to mop it all up. In my parents house there were a couple of windows prone to this problem between the panes - caused when the seal on the double glazed units failed. Because you can't get to it the result is eventually mould. The units had to be changed which to my mind seems drastic and wasteful. There should be a way of removing, cleaning and resealing units on site. Of course condensation happens with single glazing all the time. Where I live now we get condensation on the outside of the window at night. Air conditioning indoors and extreme humidity outside with night time temperatures still in the high twenties centigrade does that.

You need to compare the technical data and not get swayed by triple glazing as there are a number of factors that influence the overall performance such as the thickness of the panes, the space between them, or even if it’s laminated

We have a large rooflight at one end of our 8m south facing extension which gets the morning east sun and another at the opposite end - so nothing in the middle. I don’t find the rooflights too hot - they are just normal triple glazed lights. The hot part is the doors as they are fully glazed across the whole back ie 6m. We get sun all day and it can get very hot. I would initially suggest looking at solar coating (the proper stuff isn’t cheap - maybe £140-180 per door panel?) to reduce the heat in the first place. Not so bad if you don’t have that many windows/doors. Alternatively individual roller blinds for each panel that are designed to reduce the heat but still alow sunlight in. You can lower them midday when it’s too hot. (we will be doing this for next year as it’s cheaper than building a full permanent structure!) Or a wind out awning of course which is more flexible.
