Fireplaces Living Rooms Design Dilemma

Living Room layout - Help Needed!

Hello,

We are in the process of putting furniture together for our home. We are getting a gas fireplace installed, and are now rethinking the layout of the space. Our lounge is quite long (20 ft) but not very wide (14ft ish). We like the look of bookshelves/built ins on either side of a fireplace, but our wall seems too long for that. How would you layout this room? We don’t need dining in the space, it’s strictly a lounge. I’ve attached some pictures of the room (before we moved in, and after we painted and put new carpet in and ripped up old fireplace). I also added some of the asthetic we like (cosy, warm and inviting).

I need help with layout (couches/chairs/symmetrical/tv above fireplace or to the side).

Do any of your creative lot have any ideas?

Hi. Can I ask where the door is, is there another window and is the fire central? Re the fire over the tv, it tends to do only work with the contemporary letterbox type fires otherwise it will make for very uncomfortable viewing (plus you may have a heat issue with the tv). Do you have an image of the fire?

Yes - I’ve done a rough sketch and added the idea for fireplace (we want it to look as much like a traditional wood burner as possible)

Hello appletonk, Well you can create a hallway with screens and or modular pieces that can create shelving and interesting focal point. Or perhaps a wooden room divider/shelving.. I'll see if I can find a pic.. If not.... yes.. you could build back in a hallway... What I have been drawn to is the kitchen.. Could you start your kitchen on that right hand wall other side of the stairs.. So corner could start with large items such as larder or fridge freezer.. then you carry it along at 6m you could have a single galley and then the opposite side would be open which would be rather nice at that end with the french doors.. That area you mention to use as a playroom could also be a utility room/laundry if you don't want the washing machine and dryer in the picture, depending on the size could be stacked up one above the other.. Alternatively a beautiful model could look good on view! One such machine would be the Samsung Eco Bubble... Oh and if you have younger children they might like this.... : )) It's the back of said machine... A little smiling chap! Have to say it's the best washing machine I have had.. Well mine's a washer/dryer but it sings a tune and is utterly fabulous!! Here's one room divider shelving that I found and love but equally anything you like.. I also like the architectural element of this which I think is beautiful as empty as it is here in the picture...

In some ways it’s good to have such a large TV. Let’s face it you are sitting a very long way from it in your lovely big room! You are wondering how to make the door end of the room look used. I think we are talking trade offs with the design here, in terms of cost and layout. If you can spend a bit of money it might be worth investigating how to design a new fireplace that incorporates the TV. Sounds horrendous I know, but because you have a large tv it might work, though you’d have to be VERY careful about balance in the positioning and get specialist advice on insulating the tv from the heat from the fire. You also need to consider how much time you spend watching tv and if the upwards angle of view might give you a stiff neck from where you place the sofa...BUT... this would enable you to bring Carolina’s room layout back towards the door, making the room look more occupied, you could then also use celery girls idea to put a sort of separate more intimate seating area in the bay window - two statement chairs and a little table, maybe flanked by a pair of enormous table lamps in front of the curtains to fill the corners and highlight the curtains at night.

What is the orientation of the rooms? Consider the natural light levels in your design. Pocket doors between the two rooms are potentially a good idea to give you maximum versatility, subject to structural support considerations.

Hi your room is very similar in shape to ours - longer than it is wide! We decided to buy two couches one slighter smaller than the other. Although we have a wood burner the chimney breast is on the outside so no recess and we have a window in that wall too so couldn’t put shelving either side which I love - anyway I’ve posted a few pics I appreciate our taste maybe different but this is how we laid it out

It can help to centre furniture in a long narrow room to shorten and widen it a little. I see you have double doors at the opposite end to the window so 2 chairs rather than a couch here can feel more airy. This us what we have done (work in progress).

Weve ordered this freestanding shelving from La Redoute to give some height to the right of the low cabinets.

We have a similar very long wall with no chimney breast and have gone for picture shelves across the long expanse as no option to put recess shelving. It has really helped to add interest to the wall. Also a 4 seater and a 2 seater sofa placed in an L-shape to make it feel a bit cosier
